Crochet Sun Hat Step By Step Tutorial

Crochet Sun Hat – This pattern is a fast crochet project using worsted weight yarn. It creates a comfortable fitting solar headwear with a visor.

You can wear it with the brim splayed out to protect you from the sun or fold the brim up to keep it out of your field of vision.

The brim has a density that really allows it to stay put and not flop around, yet it is soft and can be easily coiled up and stowed in your bag.

To prevent seam or ladder effects, it is crocheted in the round, spiraling structure, without chaining between rounds.

This hat will suit a skull circumference of 20 to 23 inches on average for an adult.

Crochet Hooks:

  • US Size K (6.5mm) and Size I (5.5 mm)

Notions :

  • a stitch marker or large safety pin, scissors, yarn needle

  • 10 hdc and 7 rows = 4 inches
  • hdc: half double crochet – Yarn over, insert hook under both top loops of stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through all 3 loops on hook.

Begin with a magic adjustable loop. If you’ve never used a magic loop before, this video may be helpful. In fact, youtube is great for videos about any of the stitches or techniques used in my patterns, so if you need a refresher or want to learn something new, search for videos on youtube.

Round 1: create 10 hdc stitches into your magic loop

You’ll be placing a stitch marker or safety pin into the first stitch, remove it when you need to work stitches into that stitch and remember to replace it after working that stitch, to keep your place. Remember, this is being crocheted in a spiral.

Round 2: make 2 hdc in each stitch – repeat (20 stitches)

Round 3: *1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in following stitch* – repeat (30 stitches) Round 4: *1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in following stitch* – repeat (40 stitches) Round 5: *1 hdc in next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in following stitch* – repeat (50 stitches) Rounds 6 – 15: hdc in every stitch

Rounds 16, 17 and 18: sc in back loop only in every stitch

Switch to your US Size I hook. You are now going to begin increasing in every other round.

Round 19: *sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch* – repeat (60 stitches) Round 20: sc in every stitch

Round 21: *sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch* – repeat (70 stitches) Round 22: sc in every stitch

Round 23: *sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch* – repeat (80 stitches) Round 24: sc in every stitch

Round 25: *sc in next 7 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch* – repeat (90 stitches) Round 26: sc in every stitch

Round 27: *sc in next 8 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch* – repeat (100 stitches) Round 28: sc in every stitch

Slip stitch into the next 2 stitches. Cut your yarn, fasten off the last stitch and use your yarn needle to weave in your ends.
