Chunky Crochet Cowl – Wellington Cowl: A thick crochet neckwarmer for men, women, and teenagers with three useful buttons. Buttons may be different.

Classic, warm and chic, this cowl is a must have piece for any wardrobe. The Wellington is the crocheted sister of our knitted Elspeth Cowl. This item can be worn in a variety of ways. Completely reversible, the detail of this piece is just a bit different than your ordinary cowl.

Finished Measurements

Length 32” (81 cm) unstretched, height 9” (23 cm)

Yarn

106 yds (97 m) super bulky weight #6 yarn (shown knitted in #640-124 Barley, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, 80% acrylic, 20% wool, 106 yds/97 m per skein).

Crochet Hook and Other Materials

  • One US Size P 16 (11.5 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • 3 – 1 inch buttons

Gauge

7 sts x 4 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in HDC

Stitches and Techniques

hdc: half double crochet – Yarn over, insert hook under both top loops of stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through all 3 loops on hook.

Pattern

Chain 54.

Row 1 (WS): HDC into 3rd chain from hook and in every chain across. (52 sts)

Rows 2 – 10: Chain 2, turn, HDC into back loop only of each stitch.

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving an 8” (20.5 cm) tail. Thread yarn needle with tail and weave in ending yarn tail. Repeat with beginning yarn tail and trim off any excess yarn.

Lay cowl flat lengthwise and right side facing. Affix 3 – 1 inch buttons along top left ridge at 3rd stitch, 7th stitch and 11th stitch. Fold opposite end of cowl so that right sides are facing at both ends and intersect in a V formation, button the buttons thru the first valley, the middle peak and the last valley as shown.
