So let’s get started!

Make a chain of 22 CH.

ROUND 1: Insert the hook into the second stitch from it (see red arrow on pic.1.1) and work 2 SC into this loop. Place the marker into the first stitch like on picture 1.2. Marker – is the beginning of ROUND 1.

Work 19 SC along the chain. Crochet 3 SC into the last stitch of the chain (see pic.2). Place the second marker into the first stitch of three like on picture 2. Continue this round with 19 SC. Total quantity of stitches in ROUND 1 is 44 STs.

From now every round is worked without turning the work and without joining. That means we’ll work in spiral rounds.

ROUNDs 2-7 will be crocheted according to the classic oval pattern. I offer two options for the description: an oval scheme (pic. 3) and detailed description round by round.

+ – SC o – CH

V – INC (work 2 SC into the same stitch to make an increase)

+    – (bold) places for the 1st and 2nd markers

ROUND 2: *INC 3, SC 19* repeat 2 times [50 STs]

It means: work 2 SC into each of the first 3 stitches (pic.4). Then crochet 19 SC along. Repeat the same one more time.

Starting from the ROUND 2 work single crochets in the back loops only (BLO) – the loops further away from you. It leaves the front loops untouched and creates a beautiful pattern. In order not to make the pattern unwieldy please keep in mind that in ROUNDS 2-32 SC = SC in BLO.

Note! Please don’t forget to remove the marker into the first stitch of the 2nd round. Repeat this from round to round.

ROUND 3: *(INC 1, SC 1) rep. 3 times; SC 19* repeat 2 times [56 STs]

ROUND 4: *(INC 1, SC 2) rep. 3 times; SC 19* repeat 2 times [62 STs]

ROUND 5: *(INC 1, SC 3) rep. 3 times; SC 19* repeat 2 times [68 STs]

ROUND 6: *(INC 1, SC 4) rep.t 3 times; SC 19* repeat 2 times [74 STs]ROUND 7: *(INC 1, SC 5) rep.t 3 times; SC 19* repeat 2 times [80 STs]

The Oval bottom is finished (pic.6).

ROUND 8-32: SC 80 around [80 STs].

Now you should have a bag “body” 11 ½ -12 inches (30 cm) in height (pic.7).

To make the cross-over (joint) from one color to another less substitute, I suggest the following. Work 2-3 SL STs in blue (or other) color, break the rope, fasten off and hide the tail. Start working with the jute rope of a natural color also with 2-3 SL STs atop of blue SL STs (pic. 8).

ROUND 33: SC in BLO 80 around [80 STs].

ROUND 34: SC 80 around [80 STs].

Work SC in this round under two loops of each stitch of the previous round. In order to get a more textured pattern, crochet SC with a cross (X) and not a tick (V). To do this, grab the working thread from above, not from below when crocheting the first stitch of the SC (pic.9).

BAG HANDLES

Place 2 markers in the center of the bag “body” at a distance of 14 SC from each other. These will be the joining points of the first bag handle.

Do the same symmetrically on the other side of the bag (pic. 10). The distance from handle to handle should be 26 SC.

As a result you should get 4 markers: in the 1st ST – 15th ST – 41th ST – 55th ST

ROUND 35 (starting from the first marker): *SC, CH 50, SC in the 15th stitch from the hook (the second marker), SC 24* repeat 2 times. See pic. 11.

ROUND 36: SC around. See pic. 12.1.

Life hack! to get a smooth joint of handles and bag “body” I recommend to skip one stitch on the left side of each handle. And work 23 SC (instead of 24 SC) from handle to handle (see red arrow on pic. 12.2).

ROUND 37: SC around.

So that the handles will be stronger and will have a great look we will work SC along the entire length of the handles in each stitch of the previous round (pic.13).

VIDEO how to crochet the last round of bag handles.

Break the rope, fasten off and hide the tail.

Congratulations!!!
