Magnolia Baby Romper Crochet Pattern

Baby Romper Pattern has a beautiful texture on the robe, it is seamless & fun to make. The pattern is in four size : Size 0-3 months / 3-6 months / 6-12 months / 1-2 years.

Materials used

Yarn : Cotton, bamboo, other baby safe yarn in Size 3/DK/Light worsted

Around 280/310/350/400 yards or 260/285/320/370 m yarn is used for the dress.

Crochet hook : Size E / 3,5 mm. If it is bigger size than you prefer you can size down your hook, if it is too small than you can size up your hook.

Gauge : 18 stitches x 8 rows per 4”/10cm square in double crochet stitches

Stitch Instructions :

  • When there is a number following the stitch, it means you work stitches over that number. For example double crochet 4 means 1 double crochet in each of next 4 stitches.
  • Where you see brackets [ ] in the pattern, it means that you work every thing in it as a set. For example if you see [double crochet 3, chain 1] repeat 2 times, it means double crochet 3, chain 1, double crochet 3, chain 1.

  • The romper is worked in one piece from neckline to down.
  • The yoke has buttons and button loops at the back.
  • There are buttons also on rear diaper cover for easy changes.
  • Directions are for size 0-3 months and changes in the numbers for 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years are written in colors.
  • Chain stitches at the beginning of rows/rounds don’t count as a double crochet stitch.

Row 1

  • Loosely make 63 (63/ 63/ 69) chain stitches, start crocheting into 4th chain stitch from the hook.
  • [Double crochet 5, 2 double crochet into next stitch] repeat the increase pattern through the row (repeat 10/ 10/ 10/ 11 times). Total 70 (70/ 70/ 77) stitches.

Row 2 – This will be the romper RIGH side

  • Turn, chain 3, BACK post double crochet through the row.

Back post double crochet We will double crochet around the stitch in the BACK side.

Yarn over, insert hook from the right side to left side from the back of stitch.

Yarn over and pull through.

Yarn over and pull through last two loops on the hook.

Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

Total stitches are the same (70/ 70/ 70/ 77).

Row 3 – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, FRONT post double crochet through the row.

Front post double crochet We will double crochet around the stitch in the FRONT side.

Yarn over, insert hook from the right side to left side of the stitch.

Yarn over and pull through.

Yarn over and pull through last two loops on the hook.

  • Total stitches are the same (70/ 70/ 70/ 77).

Row 4 – Popcorn stitch row – RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 4, skip first stitch.
  • [Popcorn stitch into next stitch, chain 2, skip 1 stitch] repeat through the row.

Here is how we work popcorn stitches

5 double crochet into same stitch, loosen the loop on the hook.

Insert hook over first double crochet stitch, draw the loop through.

  • Double crochet 1 into last stitch.

Total 35 (35/ 35/ 38 ) popcorn stitches made.

Row 5 – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, 2 double crochet into space before first popcorn stitch,
  • Work [double crochet 1 over each popcorn stitch, 2 double crochet into each chain space] through the row.

Last 2 double crochet goes into space after last popcorn stitch. Total 107 (107/ 107/ 116 ) stitches.

Row 6 – RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 3, BACK post double crochet through the row. Total stitches are the same (107/ 107/ 107/ 116).

Row 7 – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, FRONT post double crochet through the row. Total stitches are the same (107/ 107/ 107/ 116).

Row 8 – RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 5, double crochet 1 into first stitch. Counts as first V stitch.

[Skip 1 stitch, double crochet 1, chain 2, double crochet 1 more into same stitch, skip 2 stitches, double crochet 1, chain 2, double crochet 1 more into same stitch] repeat through the row.

Total 43 (43/ 43/ 47 ) V stitches made.

You can skip 1 or 2 stitches couple of times at the end if needed, making sure you have an odd number of V stitches.

  • Fasten off. We need to work the next row on the RIGHT side again.

Row 9 – Once again RIGHT side

  • Join yarn into first V stitch, chain 1, single crochet into same V stitch.

Chain 1, [6 double crochet into next V stitch, chain 1, skip next V stitch] repeat through the row.

  • Chain 1, single crochet 1 into last V stitch.

We will work into same first/last V stitches at the end of next two rows.

Total 21 (21/ 21/ 23 ) shell stitches made.

Row 10 – WRONG side

  • Turn, [chain 1, skip chain space, FRONT post double crochet 6 over double crochet stitches of previous row] repeat the pattern through the row.
  • Chain 1, single crochet 1 into last V stitch.

Row 11 – RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 3.
  • Popcorn stitch over first V stitch of Row 8.

You are skipping single crochet stitches previously worked into first V stitch.

  • [Back post double crochet 6 over post stitches of previous row, Popcorn stitch into skipped V stitch of Row 8] repeat through the row.
  • Last Popcorn stitch goes into last V stitch.

It may be easier to work last popcorn stitch after folding back last two rows.

Double crochet 1 into last V stitch.

Romper Body – Marking back & front

  • There are total 148 ( 148/ 148/ 162 ) stitches on the yoke.

Mark 16th&58th/ 17th&57th/18th&56th/19th&62nd stitches from both ends.

When counting stitches please consider popcorn stitches (1) and post double crochet stitches (6).

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet 1 into space before first popcorn stitch, double crochet 16 ( 17/ 18/ 19 ) on romper back,

Total 17 ( 18/ 19/ 20 ) stitches on romper back side.

Please work 1 double crochet into space before first popcorn, 1 double crochet over each popcorn stitch, FRONT post double crochet over post stitches.

  • Chain 1 (2/ 3/ 4) for under arm, skip to romper front, double crochet 34 ( 36/ 38/ 40 ) on romper front (including marked stitches).

Again 1 double crochet over each popcorn stitch, FRONT post double crochet over post stitches.

  • Chain 1 (2/ 3/ 4) for under arm, skip to romper back, double crochet into last 16 ( 17/ 18/ 19 ) stitches on romper back, double crochet 1 into space after last popcorn stitch.

Total 17 ( 18/ 19/ 20 ) stitches on romper back side.

  • Again 1 double crochet over each popcorn stitch, FRONT post double crochet over post stitches.

Round 1 – Round 8 for size 0-3 months eight rounds

Round 1 – Round 9 for size 3-6 months nine rounds

Round 1 – Round 11 for size 6-12 months eleven rounds

  • Join yarn into romper left side, underarm chain stitch (2nd/2nd/3rd chain stitch).
  • Chain 3, double crochet all around the romper, including underarm chain stitches.
  • Join into a round by slip stitch over 1st stitch of the round.

From now on we need to join each round by slip stitch over first stitch of the round.

  • Continue with

Chain 3, double crochet through and join each round. Total stitches are the same (70/ 76/ 82/ 88).

You can adjust the length at this point.

Romper bottom will add around 5” / 12 cm.

Every 2 rounds you add will increase the length approximately 1” / 2 cm.

We will be increasing in next four rounds on the romper back only.

Round 9 – Round 12 for size 0-3 months four rounds

  • Chain 3, double crochet 9 (9/ 10/ 10),
  • 2 double crochet into each of next two stitches (2×2=4), double crochet 14 (16/ 18/ 20) into back center,2 double crochet into each of next two stitches (2×2=4),
  • Double crochet 43 (47/ 50/ 54). Total 74 (80/ 86/ 92) stitches.
  • Chain 3, repeat the same pattern and join each round by slip stitch.

  • Join yarn into marked stitch on romper back, chain 3, start crocheting into same stitch, 2 double crochet together over first 2 stitches, double crochet until last 2 stitches before marker, 2 double crochet together over last 2 stitches.
  • Turn, chain 3 after each row, total 6 (6/7/7) rows worked. Fasten off after last row.

Romper FRONT Row 1 – Row 5 for size 0-3 months & 3-6 months five rows

  • Join yarn into marked stitch on romper front, chain 3, start crocheting into same stitch, 2 double crochet together over first 2 stitches, double crochet until last 2 stitches before marker, 2 double crochet together over last 2 stitches.
  • Turn, chain 3 after each row, total 5 (5/6/6) rows worked.

  • Do not fasten off after last row for size 0-3 months & 3-6 months,
  • Fasten off after last row, join the yarn to romper front left side edge for size 6-12 months & 1-2 years and continue with bottom finishing.

Bottom Finishing

  • Working on the RIGHT side, turn sideways, chain 1.
  • Evenly work 43 ( 43 / 49 / 49 ) single crochet stitches around the leg opening.

Starting from top corner stitch, you can work,

1 single crochet into line between rows (and beginning-ending). 1 single crochet on side of each row,

1 single crochet into each stitch on upper part (skipped stitches for leg opening).

Continue with single crochet 14 ( 16/ 16/ 18) over romper back bottom.

  • Repeat the same on the second leg opening ( 43 / 43 / 49 / 49 ) and romper front bottom (14/ 16/ 16/ 18).

Join by slip stitch over first single crochet stitch.

Border around legs and buttonholes

  • We will work shell stitch border over leg opening on RIGHT side. Chain 1, start crocheting into same stitch of chain stitch.

[Single crochet 1, skip 2 stitches, 6 double crochet into next stitch, skip 2 stitches] repeat 7 (7/ 8/ 8) times. Single crochet 1 into last stitch.

Total 7 (7/ 8/ 8) shell stitches made.

  • Once again single crochet into each stitch on romper back bottom (14/ 16/ 16/ 18),

Skip to second leg opening and repeat the same shell stitch pattern.

Make 2 buttonholes on romper front bottom

There are 14 (16/ 16/ 18) stitches on romper front bottom. Work 2 buttonholes on romper front.

  • Chain 1, half double crochet 3 (4/ 4/ 4) before first buttonhole,
    • chain 2, skip 2 stitches, half double crochet 4 (4/ 4/ 6) between buttonholes,
    • chain 2, skip 2 stitches, half double crochet 3 (4/ 4/ 4) at the very end.
  • Turn, chain 2, half double crochet over romper front bottom including 2 stitches into chain spaces (14/ 16/ 16/ 18).
  • Fasten off, weave and secure yarn ends.

Single crochet around Back Opening & Button loops

  • Join yarn into base of first stitch, chain 1.
  • Single crochet around back opening downwards and upwards.

You can work 1 stitch into side of each row, 1 stitch into lines between rows, 1 stitch into center.

  • Make two button loops

Decide your button loop positions. Chain 7, single crochet 1 more into same stitch to make button loop. Fasten off, draw yarn tail to wrong side.

Buttons – make 2 for Romper back opening & 2 for Romper bottom, PLEASE SEW SAFE. Crochet buttons are used on this design. You may prefer stronger buttons on romper bottom for size other than 0-3 months.

  • Chain 3, half double crochet 8 into first chain stitch.
  • Join the round by slip stitch over first half double crochet stitch.
  • Fasten off, draw yarn tail to wrong side of the button.
  • Sew button on the romper back & bottom opposite side.
