OVERVIEW:

  • The sweater is worked in 4 pieces: Back, Front and 2 sleeves
  • Each piece is worked back and forth in rows beginning at lower edge.
  • Stitches are picked up around neck for the neckband.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS:

  • Nako Wool Sport, color No. 10307: 800 (900, 950, 1050, 1150, 1250) grams.

Note: You could choose another yarn brands, make sure that the yarn is about 120m/100g (Bulky weight).

  • Size 3.5 mm (length: 60cm to 80cm) circular needles
  • Size 4.5 mm (length: 60cm to 80cm) circular needles or a pair of 4.5mm straight knitting needles
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape
  • 2 knitting markers

GAUGE: (Approximate) 15 sts and 32 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in Shaker’s Rib stitch with 4.5mm needles.

Before knitting the sweater, you need to make a gauge swatch which is the only way to make sure that the recommended needles give you the correct gauge.

A QUICK GUIDE TO SOME SPECIAL STITCHES USED IN THIS PATTERN:

  • Knit 1 in the stitch below (K1b): Insert right-hand needle into the stitch directly below the next stitch then wrap and knit a stitch.
  • Increase (inc): Insert the left-hand needle under the running thread from front to back; knit the strand through the back with right-hand needle
  • Mattress stitch: Beginning from the bottom row of one piece, thread the needle through two stitches on the opposite piece.
  • Picking up stitches: With the RS facing, insert the needle into the first stitch; wrap the yarn through the needle and pull a loop through. Continue with all sts.

BACK PANEL:

(*) With 3.5mm needles, cast on 73 (79, 81, 87, 95, 103) sts.

Row 1 (RS): **P1, K1; repeat from ** to last st, P1

Row 2: **K1, P1; repeat from ** to last st, K1

Repeat Row 1 and Row 2 until work from beginning is 21⁄4 (21⁄4, 21⁄4, 21⁄2, 21⁄2, 21⁄2)” [6 (6, 6, 7, 7, 7) cm], ending on Row 1 (RS row).

Change to 4.5mm needle.

Row 3 (WS): K1 in all sts

Row 4: **P1, K1b; repeat from ** to last st, P1

Repeat last 2 rows until work from beginning is 8 (8½, 8½, 9, 9½, 10)” [20 (21, 22, 23, 24, 25) cm], ending with a RS row.

Shape armholes:

Row 5 (WS): Cast off 2 st at the beginning of row, K1 to end of row

Shape shoulder and neck:

Count 29 (32, 33, 35, 39, 41) sts from one side, place a marker, count next 11 (11, 11, 13, 13, 17) sts and place

Row 9 (RS): Work in pattern to first marker for right shoulder. Remove marker, join the 2nd ball of yarn and bind off 11 (11, 11, 13, 13, 17) sts; removing the 2nd marker for back neck. Work in pattern to end of row for left shoulder.

You will now work on both shoulders AT THE SAME TIME with two separated balls of yarn.

second marker. There are 30 (32, 33, 35, 39, 42) sts to the other side.

Row 9 (RS): Work in pattern to first marker for right shoulder. Remove marker, join the 2nd ball of yarn and bind off 9 (11, 11, 13, 13, 15) sts; removing the 2nd marker for back neck. Work in pattern to end of row for left shoulder.

You will now work on both shoulders AT THE SAME TIME with two separated balls of yarn.

With RS facing and 3.5mm needles pick up, beginning from left shoulder and pick up and K 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5) sts down left neck edge, 31 (35, 35, 37, 41, 45) sts on vertical-and-curved Front edge, then 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5) sts up right neck edge.

Turn to Back panel, pick up and K 2 st down right neck edge, then K 31 (35, 35, 37, 41, 45) sts on vertical-and- curved Back edge, then 2 st up left neck edge.

There are 74 (82, 82, 86, 96, 104) sts in total.

Note: It is fine if the amount of stitches you pick up for the neckband is not 74 (82, 82, 86, 96, 104) sts. However, you need to make sure that it is not too different from the number shown in the instruction and it must be an even number.

Begin with WS, work in K1, P1 Rib for until the neckband reach 6 (6, 6½, 7, 7, 7½)” [15 (16, 17, 17, 18, 18) cm]. Cast of in ribbing. Sew neckband seam. Wave in ends.
