Crochet Shawl – Pecan Pie Wrap Step By Step Tutorial

Crochet Shawl – The incredible colour shifts of a Scheepjes Whirl are displayed in the Pecan Pie Wrap. With a visually arresting design, the colour changes move diagonally from side to side to produce a true show stopper of a piece.

This rectangle wrap is rather distinctive because of the sharp edging and diagonal knitting.

Though equally lovely in a basic color or as a stashbuster project, I really like the impact of this pattern when a colour-changing yarn is used. Try experimenting with various yarn weights as well; for a warm and cozy wrap, try DK.

Making this pattern should be as much fun for you as it has been for me to develop.

Rows 148 – 161

Repeat rows 141 – 147 twice more. Do not fasten off. Do not turn. Start the border.

Border

I found that working this simple border and adding the puff stitch to each point really helps to keep the shape of the wrap and the puff stitch accentuates and weights the points, well worth doing.

Round 1

After Row 161, without turning your work, start working down the side of the first step, by working 2sc into the side of each dc (14sc worked), then work a sc into the top of each dc until the corner is reached (12sc worked), work one extra sc into the last stitch (this is the corner stitch of the step). Continue in this way around the entire wrap and join with a ss to complete the round.

Round 2

Ch1 (does not count as a st), *sc into next 12 sts, sc4tog across the next four sts, sc into next 10 sts until corner st reached, (hdc, ch1, puff, hdc) into corner st, repeat from * right around the wrap and join with a ss to complete the round.

Fasten Off, weave in the ends and give it a good block to set the shape.

Special Stitches

Chain Increase

At the beginning of the row indicated, ch15, dc into 5thch from hook, (the four skipped chains count as the first dc into the foundation chain), dc into each chain until the main body of your work is reached, (including the beginning chains, you will now have worked 12dc in total),

Grown-on double crochet – increase

At the end of the row indicated, do not turn.

To start the double crochet increase, yarn over hook, insert hook into the base of the last stitch made, see pic 2, yo hook and draw the loop through (the start of a regular dc)

Yarn over hook and drawn through one loop only (this creates the base chain for the next stitch you will make, see pic 3), yo hook, drawn through two loops, yo hook, drawn through two loops to finish the stitch

For the next stitch, yo hook, insert hook into the base of the previous st worked, see pic 4. Yo hook, pull through one loop only (this creates the base chain for the next stitch), then complete the dc in the usual way,(yo, pull through two loops, yo, pull through two loops

Continue in this way until you have an extra 12dc. Turn work ready for next row.
