Crochet Pattern Lazy Weekend Cardigan

The Lazy Weekend Cardigan is made in 5 pieces: two front sections, one back section and two sleeves.

These are then seamed together and a ribbing is added. It uses techniques like increases and decreases as well as short rows.

You can choose not to add buttons, but then it is better if you not make the neckline so steep but instead begin from row 6 of front sections, chaining 5 more sts than suggested before row 1.

Remember to still make the same total amount of rows. Chains do not count as stitches. Stitch count can be found in parentheses later in this guide.

SIZE GUIDE

Note! The measurements below are the measurements of the final garment size. Your own measurements
should be 5 cm / 2” smaller. Positive ease.

PATTERN

Front sections
Make 2. These are made from the side, meaning the width will be the length of the cardigan and height
will be the width of the cardigan. If you want a longer cardigan than suggested in the size guide you
need to add chains from the beginning.
The ribbing and the body part are worked at the same time using the same stitch. To get the ribbing to
stand out, we use a smaller crochet hook. That means you will change your hook size during every
row. You only change hook when the pattern inidicates to change hook, if there are no instructions to
change hook, continue with the hook being used.
Will be worked on the side like this and then flipped to standing. Meaning that the width will become the length. I.e. row height gauge is most important to get the right size of the garment.
You will be making 2 pieces that together make up the front.
Do not want to add buttons? The cardigan is designed to have buttons, meaning that the
fit and design looks best with them. Please keep this in mind before deciding on not adding
buttons. If you choose not to add them: begin from row 6 of front sections, chaining 5 more
sts than suggested before row 1. Remember to still make the same total amount of rows.

Front sections – continue

With the 3.5* mm hook ch 10, change to the 5** mm hook and continue chaining (60, 60, 63, 69, 69, 69). (70, 70, 73, 79, 79, 79 sts)

**or the hook you meet gauge
with. Will be referred to as the 5

Add a stitch marker after

 Back section

Also made from the side, in the same way as the front sections. Leave a long tail for sewing the side, at least 60 cm / 24”. With the 3.5 mm hook ch 10, change to the 5 mm hook and continue chaining (75, 75, 81, 87, 90, 90). (85, 85, 91, 97, 100, 100 sts)

Sewing

Place the front pieces on top of the back piece (like on picture). The side facing up is the right side.
  • Sewing the sides:
With the tails you left from the back piece: sew the sides using the mattress stitch going through two loops (not only back loop) (explained below). Sew them until you have 20-25 cm / 7.9-9.8” left until the shoulders to leave an armhole. It doesn’t have to be exact since you finish it up when attaching the sleeves. Leave the tail for now, it will be used to attach the sleeves.
  • Sewing the shoulders:
Sew the shoulder using the mattress stitch as well, also going through two loops. Sew them all the way until the front section slopes downward (as in picture).

Ribbing of the body

Attach the yarn in the bottom of the left front section with a slip knot using the smaller hook (right side
facing out). Ch 1.
  • Row 1: Space out 10 SC in the ribbing. Change to the larger hook and space out* SC around the side, neckline and other side. Change to the 3.5 mm hook for the final 10 SC. Ch 1. Turn. *For the neckline: place around 1 SC per row. Use SC2tog on the inside corners of the neckline, and you might need to use some SC2tog across the back of the neckline so that the ribbing isn’t too loose (I did that on every 4th sts).
  • Row 2-3: SC-FLO across row using the 3.5 mm hook for the first and final 10 sts. Ch 1. Turn.
  • Row 4: In this row you make button holes if you want. If not making button holes continue as row 2. For placing out 5 (6) buttons: add 1 sm 5 sts from bottom and from top on the right side of the ribbing of cardigan, as shown in the picture. Divide the amount of sts in between by 4 (5). Take that number, for example 14, and place 3 sm with 14 sts in between. SC-FLO (with 3.5 mm hook for first 10 sts and then 5 mm hook) until you reach a sm. Ch 2 (if you have larger or smaller buttons than indicated in pattern, you might need to ch more or less) and skip next 2 sts (skip as many sts as you ch). *SC-FLO to next sm, *ch 2, skip next 2 sts* repeat *-* until final 10 sts. Change to 3.5 mm hook. SC-FLO to the final sm *ch 2, skip next 2 sts*, SC-FLO across row. Ch 1. Turn.
  • Row 5: SC-FLO across row using the 3.5 mm hook for the first and final 10 sts. When reaching the ch you made for button holes: SC in the ch. Ch 1. Turn.
  • Row 6-7: SC-FLO across row using the 3.5 mm hook for the first and final 10 sts. Ch 1. Turn. Fasten off after row 7.

Sleeves

Make 2.
The sleeves are also worked from the side, meaning the width will be the length. That means you will have to decide on sleeve length from the beginning.
The below instructions assume a sleeve length of 47 cm / 18.5” which is usually a good sleeves length for many. Try on your cardigan and measure from the shoulder and from under the arms and take the
measurement between these two as a good sleeve length. For example from the shoulder to my hand I
have 53 cm / 20.9” and from under my arms 44 cm / 17.3”, so 47 cm / 18.5” is between these two.
Attach your first sleeve to the cardigan before you make the second and try on. You make sure you’ll now have a good sleeve length for you. You can also hold up the sleeve after a few rows and already then get a view on final length. The width of the ribbing is around half the width of the rest of the sleeve, meaning this is the sleeve width at the narrowest part. To increase this width: repeat row 19-20 on some of the repeats instead of the row 3-6 repeat.
To adjust the sleeve length add or remove chains. For every 2 cm remove / add 3 chains, for every 0.5” 2 ch. With the 3.5 mm hook ch 20, change to the 5 mm hook and continue chaining 52. (72 sts)
  • Row 1: In the 3rd ch from the hook HDC, HDC until 20 final sts. With the 3.5 mm hook: 20 HDC-BLO. Ch 2. Turn. (70 sts)
  • Row 2: 20 HDC-BLO. With the 5 mm hook HDC-BLO across row. Ch 2. Turn. (70 sts)
  • Row 3 – short row: (Pictures on next page) 50 HDC-BLO. Ch 2. Turn. (50 sts)
  • Row 4 – short row: (Picture A) 50 HDC-BLO. Ch 2. Turn. (50 sts)
  • Row 5: 50 HDC-BLO. (Picture B) With the 3.5 mm hook: (HDC2tog) twice on the side of row 3 and 4 to reach the ribbing (Picture C). 20 HDC-BLO (Picture D). Ch 2. Turn. (72 sts)
  • Row 6: 20 HDC-BLO. (Picture E) With the 5 mm hook: skip next st, HDCBLO2tog, HDC-BLO across row. Ch 2. Turn. (70 sts)
  • Row 7 – 18: Repeat row 3-6.
  • Row 19: 50 HDC-BLO. With the 3.5 mm hook: 20 HDC-BLO. Ch 2. Turn (70 sts)

Sleeves – continue

  • Row 20: 20 HDC-BLO. With the 5 mm hook: 50 HDC-BLO. Ch 2. Turn. (70 sts)
  • Row 21 – (32, 34, 36, 40, 44, 46)** Repeat row 3-6. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

** end earlier if you want a sleeve that is not as wide. Every row is around 1 cm / 0.5” in width and the ribbing part is half the width of this. Make sure that you end with a row 6.
