Abbreviations

This Pattern uses US Terminology

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • (sc inc) – single crochet increase
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • (hdc inc) – half double crochet increase
  • dc – double crochet
  • (dc inc) – double crochet increase
  • Slst – slip stitch
  • f/o – fasten off
  • ** – repeat

Notes:

Stitches in brackets ( ) all worked in to one stitch. Example: (sc inc) means 2sc worked in to one stitch. (3sc) means 3sc in the same stitch. (3sc) x 2 means 3sc in each of the next 2 stitches. Alternate: (sc inc) and 2sc x 3 means work 2sc in the Same stitch and then 1 sc each in the next 2 stitches. Then repeat the 2 steps 2 more times.

Materials:

  • Yarn: 3ply, crochet cotton10 or 4ply or DK
  • Any or all of the above
  • Crochet hook: 1.5mm / 2mm /2.5mm
  • Any or all of the above
  • Garden Wire: 3mm or 3.5mm (for the stem).
  • Green floral tape: any green
  • Florist wire: 26 gauge (for leaves)
  • Plant pot: 6×6”(15x15cm) optional

Specific yarn used for this model

Yarn: DMC Petra no5 and DMC Petra no3

This Yarn is available in both 3ply which is DMC Petra no5 And 4ply which is DMC Petra no3

You could also use crochet cotton 10 which is 2ply

DMC no5 makes the small size leaf with hook size 1.5mm

DMC no3 makes the medium size leaf with hook size 2mm

DMC no5 doubled up makes the large size. This almost equals DK. With hook size 2.5mm.

This yarn is available online at Etsy, Ebay, woolwearhouse.com, love crafts, purplelinda.com and many more. However you can use any type of yarn or wool, just be aware that the size of the leaf might be different. Gauge is not important as long as you are consistent.

Additional Materials:

If you are using a plant pot then I suggest to use either styrofoam, or dry florist sponge. (you can easily purchase both of these items from Ebay) along with the wires, floral tape etc…

Cut the sponge/styrofoam to the size that fits your pot, place it inside and push the stems of your flowers in to it. Cover with pebbles or soil.

Pattern Notes:

The size of the leaves will depend on the size of yarn used.

Following the tutorial and using the recommended yarn, your finished leaves will measure approximately:

  • Small: 6 x 6”(15 x 15cm) DMC Petra5
  • Medium: 7 x 7”(18 x18cm) DMC Petra3 or any 4ply yarn.
  • Large: 8 x 8”(20 x 20cm) DMC Petra no5 doubled up or any DK yarn.

The model in the picture below was made with 9 leaves. 2 large, 3 medium and 4 small. The complete plant is approx. 21”(53cm) tall.

Base Row / Wire

Ch28, Cut a piece of florist WIRE of approximately 16- 18”(40-46cm) and thread it through the stitch on your hook (p1/2).

Base Row:

Ch1, Skip1 (p3) crochet the following over the wire, 26sc (p4/5).

(3sc) in the last chain I suggest to work 2 of those sc first (p6), pull the wire around and down equally and work the 3rd (p7). Pull the start tail tight (p8) = 27 on each side & 1 extra at the tip of the leaf and the skipped chain at the base.

Design A Section 1

I have divided the leaf pattern in to 5 sections to make it as easy and clear as possible. Starting at the tip of the leaf and working the 1st side down the opposite side over the wire (p1), a few stitches per each section.

Row1: Down (p2)

Row.2: Up Skip1 (p4) 3sc

TURN (p6/7)

Start row.3 (next page) by skipping the 1st. Stitch as shown in (p6/7),

Start every down row of all sections by skipping the 1st stitch.

Design A -Section 1 cont..

Row.3: Down

Skip1 , 7sc (sc dec) worked through the (post of the last sc of the 1st down row and the next chain on the base to be crochet over the wire). Keep this stitch very tight to avoid gaps. Detailed explanation (p1-6). Then work, 3sc over the wire (p6/7), TURN (do NOT ch1) = 14 ch of the base row used.

Outer Wire

Insert a second wire

  • Small Leaf approx. 32”(80cm)
  • Medium Leaf approx. 35”(90cm)
  • Large Leaf approx. 38”(96cm).

Double the wire up for the med. and large leaves. Bend the 1st wire out of the way at the back of the leaf (p1).

Bend the starting end at the back so it can’t slip out.

Start in the 1st chain as indicated in (p3). We will be working through the chains and post all around the leaf.

Crochet this whole round over the wire (p4). Instructions on the following pages.

Outer Wire Round cont . . .

Stretch the leaf thoroughly in all directions , especially the wire in the middle (p1/2/3/4). Press the leaf down and gently bend all the wires toward you (p4).

Gently twist all 4 wires together, careful not to distort the shape of the leaf (p5).

Wind the tail tight around the wires and trap in between to secure it (p6).

Various Designs Options

You can mix up the design by changing the 1st two rows of various sections of your choice. Below are some examples. Instructions on the following page.

Changes to rows 1 and 2 of the sections.

Shaping the leaf

Squeeze the wires together just above the stem (p1).

Gently bend the sides as shown in (p2).

Bend the tip down a bit (p3/4)

Or you can bend the tip up for a different look as shown in (p5/6)

Adding the Stem

Cut a piece of the Garden wire that will fit your plant pot or vase. If you made more than one leaf, I suggest to cut the stems at different sizes to make it look more realistic. The stems used in the large model range from 20”(50cm) for the tallest and 8”(20cm) the shortest including the part that will sit inside the pot (p2).

Tape the leaf stem to the garden wire as shown in (p1/2). Wrap the rest of the wire. Measure the part that will sit in the plant pot (p3). Cut another piece of garden wire of approx. 4 – 6” depending on the size of the leaf and stem size you chose.

Attach to the large stem above the part that sits inside the pot (p4/5/6).

You could bend some of the stems to make it look more realistic.
