Notes:

Making 3D crochet projects is more difficult than your usual crochet projects. This project is suitable for an Intermediate skill level.

You will also need to know how to begin with a magic ring.

Magic Ring: Make a loop with your yarn. Holding the loop with your fingers, insert the hook into the loop and pull the yarn through the loop on the hook. Now work your stitches into the loop and simply pull the tail end of the yarn to draw up the ring.

There are many online tutorials if this is a new technique for you.

All stitches not made in a foundation chain are to be worked through both legs of the stitch unless otherwise stated.

Petal A Chart

Petal A Instructions

Petal: Make 3 per rose of any size Color: Flower color (yellow shown)

Foundation: Slip knot (leave a 2-3” tail), ch 5

Round 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 2 chs, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in last ch, rotate work (hold the tail along the chain and wrap the new sts around the tail), hdc in next 2 chs, sc in last ch, sl st in turning ch

Round 2: ch 1, insert .4 mm (26 Gauge US) wire through ch on hook, leaving a 3” tail (work round by wrapping each st around wire all the way around the petal)

Using heavier yarn or a larger hook may require a longer piece of wire – calculate length of wire needed per petal by measuring length of one petal and multiply by 2, add an extra 4-5” for safety and comfort while working. The same can be applied to the leaves. Remember: excess wire can be removed later, but adding more is difficult

sc in 1st sc of Round 1 and next 3sts, 2-sc inc in ch 1 space of Round 1, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in turning ch with hook in front of wires and yarn behind wires, cut the wire leaving a second tail about 5” in length.

Finishing: Pull both wire tails through the last st before tightening.

Wrap the yarn tail around the wires twice and then again so it sits between the two wires. Twist the wires three times so the twists sit right up against the end of the wrapped yarn. Cut the yarn close to the wire. Do not trim the wires. Trim any yarn tail from the start of the petal close to the petal so there is no yarn tail left.

Sepal Chart

Sepal Instructions

Petal: Make 1 per any size rose. Color: Leaf color (green shown)

Foundation: Magic Ring, ch 1, 5 sc in MR, pull tail mostly tight (you should be leaving an opening large enough for the stem to fit through at assembly), sl st in 1st sc to join (5 sts)

Leave the tail in the back of the Foundation round so that as you work the Round 1 and Round 2 the tail will be inside of the work

While working Round 1, it may feel awkward or challenging. This is normal when working with a small number of sts.

Round 1: ch 1, sc in next st & each st around, sl st in 1st sc of round to join (5 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2-sc inc in joining sl st of Round 1 and each st around, sl st in 1st sc of round to join (10 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, sc in joining sl st of Round 2, [2-sc inc in next st, sc in next st] 4x, 2-sc inc in next st, sl st in 1st sc of round to join (15 sts)

Round 4: ch 1, sc in joining sl st of Round 3 and each st around, sl st in 1st sc of round to join (15 sts)

Round 5: ch 1, sc in joining sl st of Round 4, [sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next st] 4x, dctog over last 2 sts, sl st in 1st sc of round to join (10 sts)

Do not cut yarn or finish off. Keep the current st on the hook and ready to move on to the sepal leaves.

The Sepal has 5 leaves coming off of the center. Each leaf will be worked individually in rows. This means that the yarn will be cut at the tip of each leaf and picked up at the center to start the next leaf. The 1st leaf is the exception as it will just continue from the yarn used to make Round 5.

Sepal Leaf Pattern: Repeated 5 times

Row 1: ch 2, 2-dc inc in the same st as the ch and next st, turn work (4 sts)

Row 2: ch 2, 2-dc inc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, 2-dc inc in next st, turn work (6 sts)

Row 3: ch 2, dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, dctog over next 2 sts, turn work (4 sts)

Row 4: ch 2, [dc2tog over next 2 sts] 2x , turn work (2 sts) Row 5: ch 2, dc2tog over next 2 sts (1 st)

Ch 3, finish off leaving a yarn tail of 3” at the end of each sepal leaf

After making the first leaf, the yarn will need to be picked up at the center to make the next leaf until all 5 leaves are made. To pick up the yarn and start the next leaf, insert the hook through the next st of Round 5 after the previous leaf.

Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through as normal, holding the tail behind the work. You can hold this tail along Round 5 and work Row 1 of the Sepal Leaf pattern around it to secure it

Leaf Chart

Leaf Instructions

Leaf: Make 3, 4 or 5 per stem. Color: Green

Foundation: Slip knot (leave a 2-3” tail), ch 14

Round 1: Insert .4 mm (26 Gauge US) wire through st on hook, leaving a 3” tail. Work Round 1 with the loop of every st around the wire.

Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next 2 chs, 2-tr inc in next ch, tr in next 2 chs, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, (sc, ch 1, sc) in last ch, rotate work (hold the tail along the chain and wrap

the new sts around the tail), sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, tr in next 2 chs, 2-tr inc in next ch, tr in next 2 chs, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st in turning ch with hook in front of wires and yarn behind wires, cut the wire leaving a second 3” tail.

Round 2: Do not work this round around the wire tails. [ch 1, sl st in next st] 14x, (sc, hdc, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in post of hdc, sc) in ch 1 space of Round 1, [ch 1, sl st in next st] 14x, sl st in turning ch with hook in front of wires and yarn behind wires.

Finishing: Pull both wire tails through the last st before tightening.

Wrap the tail around both the wires for 2-3” and then place the yarn so it sits between the two wires.

Twist the wires twice so the twists sit right up against the end of the wrapped yarn.

Cut the yarn close to the wire and trim the tails near the twists. Cut any yarn tail from the start of the leaf close to the leaf so that none of the tail is visible.

Coloring the Edges

Color all around the sides of the leaf with the red marker. Start with lightly marking it and slowly build up to the desired color.

Assembly

If using Acrylic yarn (if using natural fiber, skip this step, down to the shading of the petals): Light the candle and hold each flower part a few inches above (NOT IN) candle flame to let the rising warmth melt the fuzzy stray fibers sticking out. Don’t get too close to flame or hold the crochet work in one place for long or the yarn may get smoke stained or burnt.

Shaping the Sepal

Move the center of the Speal over the flame. Move each Sepal leaf over the flame while holding the yarn tail taut and away from the center.

Pinch the end of the Sepal leaf and pull it out from the center to shape the leaf into a point. Hold the yarn tail of each leaf over the flame so that the yarn tail breaks about 2-3” from the tip of the leaf. Repeat for each leaf. Use scissors to trim the yarn tails to about 2”. If the ends are frayed, use very short burst over the flame and rolling it between your fingers to neaten the ends.

Neatening the Petals and Leaves (this step is optional and can be done with any fiber)

Turn on the hair straightener and set it to a medium-high setting. Once warm, clamp the straightener on the petal, leaf and sepal tips in very short bursts. If left on for more than a very short amount of time, the straightener can burn the yarn. For the Sepal, pinch the center in short bursts all around.

Shaping Petals A, B and C

Use the straightener in a short burst and, with the right side of the petal facing you, use your finger to push the center of the

Shaping Petals D and E

Shape the Petals by using either the flame or the straightener to heat the petal. With the back side of the Petal facing you, place one thumb at the base of the Petal and the other at the top center of the Petal. Move your thumbs together so that the thumb on the base pushes the base of the Petal away from you and the top of the Petal towards you.

Shaping the Leaves

Hold the tip of the leaf briefly over the flame and pinch the tip of the leaf to make the end more of a point.

Assemble the Leaves

Step 1: Have 3-5 leaves ready to assemble depending on how many you want on one stem. Hold two leaves on top of a third so that the right side of all are facing you and so that the base of the one on the bottom is sitting about 1/3 of the way up the other 2 leaves. Take the floral tape and start wrapping it around the stems of all 3 leaves about 1” below the base of the top leaves. Wrap

Step 2: Continue wrapping the floral tape down and around all the wires to cover about 1-2”. Bend the top leaf out to one side and the middle leaf out to the other side. If only assembling 3 leaves, skip to Step 5.

Step 3: Continue wrapping the stems for another 1-2”. About 3-4” below the lowest leaves should be wrapped. Add a 4th leaf by making sure the right side is facing the same as the others and place it along the stem so that about 1-2” of the yarn wrapped wires are above the floral tape. Continue wrapping the floral tape a few times around all 4 leaves. Bend the 4th leaf out to the side. If only assembling 4 leaves, skip to Step 5.

Step 4: Place the 5th leaf along the main stem so that the right side is facing the same as the others and place it along the stem so that about 1-2” of the yarn wrapped wires are above the floral tape. Continue wrapping the floral tape a few times around all 5 leaves. Bend the leaf out to the opposite side of the 4th leaf.

Step 5: Continue wrapping the floral tape around all the wire until the wire is completely covered. Cut and secure the end of the floral tape.

Assemble a Full Rose

Regardless of the size Rose you are making (Small, Medium or Large) start here for assembly instructions.

Step 1: Use 1 piece of the 1.5mm (16 Gauge US) cut to the desired length of the stem, approximately 12”.

Step 2: Have the 3 Petal A’s within reach. With the right side of Petal A1 facing you, put a line of hot glue down the edge of a Petal A (Petal A1). Place the glued edge of Petal A1 along the left inside edge of another Petal A (Petal A2).

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 by applying the hot glue to Petal A2 and placing it along the inside left edge of another Petal A (Petal A3).

Step 4: Repeat Step 2 by applying the hot glue to Petal A3 and placing it along the inside left edge of Petal A1.

Step 5: Open up the base of the rose by gently pulling the wire tails of all Petal A’s away from each other. Place a large dab of hot glue inside the petals. Insert the stem into the petals and the hot glue. Hold until secure and pinch the wires of the Petal As along the stem.

Step 6: Hold the petal colored yarn along the stem so that the end starts a few inches below the base of the petals and runs along the stem back to the base of the petals. Wrap tightly once around the stem and all wires from the petals. Wrap the yarn in a Figure 4 around the stem, all wires and the yarn tail and pull tight so that it sits at the base of the petals. Trim the wire tail close to the base of the petals.

Step 7: Hold a Petal B (Petal B1) so that it is curving away from you. This is the side hot glue will be applied on for all Petal B’s. Apply a dab of hot glue at the left side of the base of Petal B1. Hold Petal B1 with the glue facing you so that the left side of the petal sits on a seam between two Petal As. Keeping the left side of Petal B1 in place, wrap Petal B1 around the Petal A bud and secure. The base of Petal B1 should sit just below the base of the Petal As.

If using the removable stitch marker (used to keep track of Petal 1 of each round), place it through the tip of Petal B1.

Step 8: Place a dab of hot glue along the base of another Petal B (Petal B2). Place Petal B2 so that, when placed on the rose, the left edge of Petal B2 is along the base of the last round of Petal B1.

Step 9: Repeat Step 8 with another Petal B (Petal B3) and glue it on top of Petal B2.

Step 10: Repeat Step 8 3 more times to secure Petal B4, Petal B5 and Petal B6. The right edge of Petal B6 should sit just under the left edge of Petal B1.

Step 11: Apply glue to Petal B7 the same way as shown in Step 8. Place Petal B7 so that it is centered on top of the seam between Petal B6 and Petal B1 and sits on top of both petals.

Step 12: Make sure all wires from the Petal B’s are sitting along the stem. Wrap the yarn tightly around all wires 3 times. Wrap the yarn in a Figure 4 (same as shown in Step 6) around all wires and pull tight.

Step 13: Hold a Petal C (Petal C1) so that it is curving away from you. This is the side hot glue will be applied on for all Petal C’s. Place a large dab of hot glue on the bottom left of Petal C1. Place Petal C1 on the rose so that the base is just below the existing base of the rose and so that, when the hot glue side of the petal is facing the rose, the right side of Petal C1 is aligned with the seam between Petal B1 and Petal B2. If using the removable stitch marker, Petal B1 is already marked. After placing Petal C1, move the removable stitch marker from Petal B1 to the tip of Petal C1.

Step 14: Place a “W” of hot glue along the bottom of a Petal C (Petal C2). Glue Petal C2 onto the rose so that the left edge of Petal C2 is aligned with the center of Petal C1 and Petal C2 is sitting on top of Petal C1.

Step 15: Repeat Step 14 3 more times to secure Petal C3, Petal C4 and Petal C5.

Step 16: Repeat Step 14 to secure Petal C6. The right edge of Petal C6 should sit just under the left edge of Petal C1. Place a line of hot glue on the inside left edge of Petal C1 and secure it on top of Petal C6.

Step 17: Apply a “W” of glue to the bottom of a Petal C (Petal C7). Glue Petal C7 to the rose so that the right edge of Petal C7 is aligned with the left edge of Petal C2 and it is sitting on top of both Petal C6 and Petal C1.

Step 18: Make sure all wires from the Petal C’s are sitting along the stem. Wrap the yarn tightly around all wires 3 times. Wrap the yarn in a Figure 4 (same as shown in Step 6) around all wires and pull tight.

If assembling a Small Rose, cut the yarn close to the stem, use hot glue to secure the wrapped yarn to the stem and skip to Step 31.

Step 19: Hold a Petal D (Petal D1) so that it is curving away from you. This is the side hot glue will be applied on for all Petal D’s. Place a large dab of hot glue on the bottom left of Petal D1. Place Petal D1 on the rose so that the base is just below the existing base of the rose and so that, when the hot glue side of the petal is facing the rose, the right side of Petal D1 is aligned with the seam between Petal C1 and Petal C2. If using the removable stitch marker, Petal C1 is already marked. After placing Petal D1, move the removable stitch marker from Petal C1 to the tip of Petal D1.

Step 20: Place a “W” of hot glue along the bottom of a Petal D (Petal D2). Glue Petal D2 onto the rose so that the left edge of Petal D2 is aligned with the center of Petal D1 and Petal D2 is sitting on top of Petal D1.

Step 21: Repeat Step 20 3 more times to secure Petal D3, Petal D4 and Petal D5.

Step 22: Repeat Step 20 to secure Petal D6. The right edge of Petal D6 should sit just under the left edge of Petal D1.

Step 23: Apply a “W” of glue to the bottom of a Petal D (Petal D7). Glue Petal D7 to the rose so that the right edge of Petal D7 is aligned with the left edge of Petal D2 and it is sitting on top of both Petal D6 and Petal D1.

Step 24: Make sure all wires from the Petal D’s are sitting along the stem. Wrap the yarn tightly around all wires 3 times. Wrap the yarn in a Figure 4 (same as shown in Step 6) around all wires and pull tight.

If assembling a Medium Rose, cut the yarn close to the stem, use hot glue to secure the wrapped yarn to the stem and skip to Step 31.

Step 25: Hold a Petal E (Petal E1) so that it is curving away from you. This is the side hot glue will be applied on for all Petal E’s. Place a line of hot glue on the bottom left of Petal E1. Place Petal E1 on the rose so that the base is just below the existing base of the rose and so that, when the hot glue side of the petal is facing the rose, the right side of Petal E1 is aligned with the seam between Petal D1 and Petal D2. If using the removable stitch marker, Petal D1 is already marked. After placing Petal E1, remove the stitch marker.

Step 26: Place a line of hot glue along the bottom of a Petal E (Petal E2). Glue Petal E2 onto the rose so that the left edge of Petal E2 is aligned with the base of the right side of Round 2 of Petal E1 and Petal E2 is sitting on top of Petal E1.

Step 27: Repeat Step 26 3 more times to secure Petal E3, Petal E4 and Petal E5.

Step 28: Repeat Step 14 to secure Petal E6. There should be a small gap between the right edge of Petal E6 and the left edge of Petal E1.

Step 29: Apply a line of glue to the bottom of a Petal E (Petal E7). Glue Petal E7 to the rose so that the left edge of Petal E7 is aligned with the base of the right side of Round 2 of Petal E6 and it is sitting on top of both Petal E6 and Petal E1.

Step 30: Make sure all wires from the Petal Es are sitting along the stem. Wrap the yarn tightly around all wires 3 times. Wrap the yarn in a Figure 4 (same as shown in Step 6) around all wires and pull tight. Cut the yarn close to the stem and use hot glue to secure the wrapped yarn.

Step 31: Start wrapping floral tape around all wires along the stem right at the base of the rose. Wrap down the full length of the stem and then wrap back up the stem to the base of the rose. Break the floral tape and secure.

Step 32: Insert the end of the stem into the Sepal and out through the hole at the bottom of the base. The Sepal should be oriented so that the stem goes past the Sepal leaves and through the cylindrical part of the Sepal then through the bottom of the Sepal. Slide the Sepal up so that the leaves are almost touching the base of the rose.

Step 33: Add enough of hot glue to the inside of the Sepal to fill up the space with hot glue. Slide the Sepal all the way up to the base of the rose to secure in place.

Step 34: Add a line of hot glue along each Sepal leaf starting from the center and ending about halfway out the length of the leaf. Press each Sepal leaf up onto the rose to secure it.

Step 35: Start wrapping the floral tape around the stem at the base of the Sepal. Continue wrapping down the length of the stem and then back up to the base of the Sepal.

Step 36: Continue wrapping the floral tape back down the stem for about 3-5”. Place a leaf bunch along the stem so that a few inches of the main leaf stem is above the floral tape, alongside the already wrapped section of the stem. Continue wrapping around both stems.

Step 37: Wrap floral tape around the remaining length of the stem. Break and secure the end of the floral tape. Bend the stem and leaves into the desired positons.

Feel free to be creative with the number of leaves placed with the different size roses to create a unique arrangement.
