Baby Summer Playsuit Crochet Pattern

Summer Playsuit is a fashionable cute design, perfect for any occasion and everyday use. Adding bottom edging is optional. The same pattern can be used to make a jumpsuit with or without edging.

You can make adorable rompers for babies and toddlers. The pattern is in six different size: 0-3 months / 3-6 months / 6-12 months / 1-2 years / 3-4 years / 5-6 years.

Yarn : Cotton, bamboo or other baby safe yarn in Size 3/DK/Light worsted.

You will need around 210/250/300/350/440/480 yards or 195/230/280/320/400/440 m yarn. Crochet hook : Size E / 3,5 mm. If it is bigger size than you prefer you can size down your hook, if it is too small than you can size up your hook.

Gauge: 18 stitches x 8 rows per 4”/10cm square in double crochet stitches.

Stitches used :

  • Chain stitch, Slip stitch,

  • Front and back post stitches. Stitch Instructions :
  • When there is a number following the stitch, it means you work stitches over that number. For example double crochet 4 means 1 double crochet in each of next 4 stitches.
  • Where you see brackets [ ] in the pattern, it means that you work every thing in it as a set. For example if you see [double crochet 3, chain 1] repeat 2 times, it means double crochet 3, chain 1, double crochet 3, chain 1.

  • Directions are for size 0-3 months, changes in the numbers for other size are written in colors.
  • This open back design is worked top to down.
  • The same pattern can be used to make tie back jumpsuit with longer legs. Adding bottom edging on legs is optional (page 10).
  • You will find tables showing numbers of rows and stitches needed by size to guide you through your project.
  • Chain stitches at the beginning of the rows/rounds don’t count as a half/double crochet stitch.

Row 1

Loosely make 21 (21/ 23/ 23/ 27/ 27) chain stitches, start crocheting into 3rd chain stitch from the hook, half double crochet into chain stitches through the row. Total 19 (19/ 21/ 21/ 25/ 25) stitches.

Row 2 – Row 3 two rows

  • Turn, chain 2, half double crochet through each row. Total stitches are the same (19/ 19/ 21/ 21/ 25/ 25).

Row 4 – This will be the RIGHT side – Back post half double crochet stitch row

  • Turn, chain 2, back post half double crochet through the row. Total stitches are the same (19/ 19/ 21/ 21/ 25/ 25).

Here is how we work back post half double crochet stitch

Half double crochet around the stitch in the BACK side.

Yarn over, insert hook from the right side to left side from the back of the stitch. Yarn over and pull through.

Yarn over and pull through loops on the hook.

Row 5 – Cluster Stitches – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet 1 into first stitch, [skip 1 stitch, cluster V into next stitch] repeat through the row, double crochet 1 into last stitch. Total 8 (8/ 9/ 9/ 11/ 11) cluster V stitches made.

Here is how we make cluster stitches (Cluster Stitch, Cluster V Stitch).

Cluster Stitch (Two Double Crochet Cluster Stitch)

Double crochet into the stitch leaving it unfinished by keeping the last loop on the hook.

(Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over, draw yarn. Total 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through last two loops on the hook. Two 2 loops left on the hook)

Work second double crochet stitch into same stitch and leave it at the same unfinished position.

(Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over, draw yarn. Total 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through last two loops on the hook. Three 3 loops left on the hook)

Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Cluster V Stitch

Work cluster stitch, chain 1, one more cluster into same stitch.

Total 2 cluster stitches into same stitch.

Row 6 – RIGHT side

Double crochet stitches RIGHT side is your jumpsuit RIGHT side.

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet through the row. Please work 1 stitch into each stitch, 2 stitches into each 1 chain space. Total 34 (34/ 38/ 38/ 46/ 46) stitches.

Row 7 – Cluster Stitches – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet 1 into first stitch, skip 2 (2/ 1/ 1/ 2/ 2) stitches, [cluster V into next stitch, skip 2 stitches] repeat through the row, double crochet 1 into last stitch. Total 10 (10/12/12/14/14) cluster V stitches made.

Row 8 – RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet through the row. Total 42 (42/ 50/ 50/ 58/ 58) stitches.

Row 9 – Cluster Stitches – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet 1 into first stitch, skip 2 stitches, [cluster V into next stitch, skip 3 stitches] repeat through the row, double crochet 1 into last stitch. Total cluster V stitches are the same (10/ 10/ 12/ 12/ 14/ 14).

Skip to jumpsuit body on size 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years.

Repeat Row 8 and Row 9 pattern one more time (Row 10-11) for size 3-4 years, 5-6 years.

Jumpsuit body

Round 1 – RIGHT side

  • Chain 41 (45/45/51/51/55), join into a round by slip stitch over first stitch of the row. From now on we will work in rounds, and join each round.
  • Marking back area. Mark double crochet stitches next to first/last cluster V stitches on both ends. We will be working same number of cluster V stitches (10/ 10/ 12/ 12/ 14/ 14) on front in next two cluster stitch rounds. We will work front and back post stitches over the back (including marked stitches).
  • Chain 3, turn to RIGHT side, double crochet 1+ 41 (45/45/51/51/55) +1 on the back area. Please notice that first and last stitch goes over marked stitch. Total 43 (47/ 47/ 53/ 53/ 57) double crochet stitches on the back.
  • Double crochet 40 (40/ 48/ 48/ 56/ 56) over cluster stitches on the front. Again working 1 stitch into each stitch, 2 stitches into each 1 chain space.
  • Join the round by slip stitch over first double crochet stitch. From now on we will join each round by slip stitch over first stitch of the round. Total 83 (87/ 95/ 101/ 109/ 113) stitches.

Round 2 – WRONG side

  • Turn to WRONG side, chain 3, skip 2 stitches, [cluster V into next stitch, skip 3 stitches] repeat until marked area, skip next stitch. Please notice that same number of cluster V stitches (10/10/12/12/14/14) are worked on front. [back post next stitch, front post next stitch] repeat on the back marked area. Total 43 (47/ 47/ 53/ 53/ 57) post stitches on the back.

Please notice that we have started and finished with back post stitch over the marked area.

Join the round by slip stitch over first cluster stitch.

Back post double crochet

Double crochet around the stitch in the BACK side.

Yarn over, insert hook from the right side to left side from the back of the stitch. Yarn over and pull through.

Round 3 – RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 3, [front post double crochet over front post stitch, back post double crochet over back post stitch of previous round] on the marked area. Please notice that we have started and finished with front post stitch over the marked area.

Double crochet over cluster stitches in the same way on the front.

Join the round by slip stitch over first front post double crochet stitch.

Round 4 – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3.

Working cluster stitches on the front. Skip 2 stitches, [cluster V into next stitch, skip 3 stitches] repeat on the front. Again same number of cluster V stitches are worked on the front (10/10/12/12/14/14).

Working cluster stitches over marked area on the back

[Skip 1 stitch, cluster V into next stitch, skip 2 stitches, cluster V into next stitch] repeat until the end of the round.

You need to make 18 (20/ 20/ 22/ 22/ 24) cluster V stitches on the back.

  • Join the round by slip stitch.

Please make sure you have an even number of cluster V stitches in total around the body.

Jumpsuit body repeated pattern Round 5 – RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet through and join the round by slip stitch. Total 112 (120/ 128/ 136/ 144/ 152) stitches.

Round 6 – Cluster Stitches – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, skip 2 stitches, [cluster V into next stitch, skip 3 stitches] repeat through the round, skip last stitch, join the round by slip stitch over first cluster stitch. Total cluster V stitches are the same 28 (30/ 32/ 34/ 36/ 38).

Round 5 and Round 6 are repeated

  • times for size 0-3 months (Round 5-6, 7-8, 9-10)
  • times for size 3-6 months (Round 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12)
  • times for size 6-12 months (Round 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14)
  • times for size 1-2 years (Round 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16)
  • times for size 3-4 years (Round 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18)

First leg Round 1 – RIGHT side

  • You can leave long beginning yarn tail for strengthening/closing up the joining point.

Join yarn into front marked center, chain 4 (4/4/8/8/8), slip stitch into back marked center. You have set the crotch.

Chain 3, working on the RIGHT side, double crochet into stitches on first leg and then into chain stitches on the crotch.

Join into a round by slip stitch. Total 60 (64/ 68/ 76/ 80/ 84) stitches.

First leg Round 2 – Cluster Stitches – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, skip 2 stitches, [cluster V into next stitch, skip 3 stitches] repeat through the round, skip last stitch, join the round by slip stitch.

Total 15 (16/ 17/ 19/ 20/ 21) cluster V stitches made.

First leg Round 3 – RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet through and join the round by slip stitch. Total stitches are the same (60/ 64/ 68/ 76/ 80/ 84).
  • You can fasten off at the end of Round 3.
  • You can adjust the length by repeating Round 2 and Round 3 as many times needed to work longer jumpsuit legs.
  • Working edging over short or even long jumpsuit legs is also optional.

Edging Round 1 – DECREASE

  • Chain 3, [front post double crochet 1 over first stitch, back post double crochet 1 over next TWO stitches] repeat through the round. Join the round by slip stitch over first post stitch. Total number of stitches are not so important.

Edging Round 2 for size 0-3 months and 3-6 month one round

Edging Round 2 – Round 3 for size 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-6 years two rounds

  • Chain 3, [front post double crochet over front post stitch, back post double crochet over back post stitch of previous round] repeat through and join each round by slip stitch over first post stitch. Total stitches are the same.
  • Fasten off after last round and secure yarn ends.

Repeat the same on the second leg

  • Join the yarn into center on the back side, chain 3, double crochet into same crotch chain stitches and then remaining stitches of the second leg. Repeat the same leg and edging pattern on the second leg.

Tie back straps and single crochet finishing over jumpsuit – Work on the RIGHT side

  • Join the yarn over 2nd chain stitch from top edge, loosely make around 60 (65/ 70/ 75/ 80/ 85) chain stitches for first strap.
  • Starting from 2nd chain stitch from the hook, single crochet into chain stitches.

Continue with first arm opening, jumpsuit back, and second arm opening. You can work 1 stitch over side of half double crochet rows (first three rows), 1 stitch over side of double crochet rows, 1 stitch into line between double crochet rows, 1 stitch into each stitch on jumpsuit back (please control the fitting and evenly skip stitches to tighten up on the back if needed).

  • Again work same number of chain stitches for the second strap and single crochet into chain stitches. Continue to single crochet over jumpsuit front top, finish with slip stitch over base of first strap. Fasten off and secure all yarn ends.

Tassel – Optional – make 2

Wind yarn over your three or four fingers depending on size you prefer, 25-30 times. Make a knot, repeat a couple of times.

Sew tassels on strap ends. Wind yarn over the tassel, secure yarn tail in the wrong side. Cut tassel ends.
