Baby Romper Crochet Pattern

Romper is a fashionable cute design, perfect for any occasion and everyday use. It can be worn over a short/long sleeve body.

The pattern is in five different size: 0-3 months / 3-6 months / 6-12 months / 1-2 years / 3-4 years.

Yarn : Cotton, bamboo or other baby safe yarn in Size 3/DK/Light worsted.

You will need around

  • 210/220/300/380/480 yards or 195/200/275/350/440 m yarn for the romper
  • 60-80 yards or m yarn for the straps and tassels if you would like to work in the second color. Crochet hook : Size E / 3,5 mm. If it is bigger size than you prefer you can size down your hook, if it is too small than you can size up your hook.

Gauge: 17 stitches x 8 rows per 4”/10cm square in double crochet stitches.

  • Front and Back Post stitch. Stitch Instructions :
    • When there is a number following the stitch, it means you work stitches over that number. For example double crochet 4 means 1 double crochet in each of next 4 stitches.
    • Where you see brackets [ ] in the pattern, it means that you work every thing in it as a set. For example if you see [double crochet 3, chain 1] repeat 2 times, it means double crochet 3, chain 1, double crochet 3, chain 1.

  • Directions are for size 0-3 months & changes in the numbers for size 6-12 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 3-4 years are written in colors.
  • The design is worked top to down.
  • Romper top back and front panels are worked separately and joined to form body.
  • You will find tables showing numbers of rows and stitches needed by each size to guide as you are working on your project.
  • Chain stitches at the beginning of the rows/rounds don’t count as a half / double crochet stitch.

Row 1

  • Loosely make 23 (23/ 23/ 31/ 31) chain stitches.
  • Start crocheting into 3rd chain stitch from the hook, half double crochet into chain stitches. Total 21 ( 21/ 21/ 29/ 29) stitches

Row 2 – Row 3 two rows

  • Turn, chain 2, half double crochet through each row. Total stitches are the same (21/ 21/ 21/ 29/ 29).

Cluster Stitches are used on this romper design. We will make

  • Cluster Shell Stitch in the center for INCREASE and
  • Cluster V Stitches on both sides

Here is how we make cluster stitches (Cluster Stitch, Cluster V Stitch, Cluster Shell Stitch).

Cluster Stitch (Two Double Crochet Cluster Stitch)

Double crochet into the stitch leaving it unfinished by keeping the last loop on the hook. (Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over, draw yarn. Total 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through last two loops on the hook. Two 2 loops left on the hook)

Work second double crochet stitch into same stitch and leave it at the same unfinished position. (Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over, draw yarn. Total 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through last two loops on the hook. Three 3 loops left on the hook)

Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook

Cluster V Stitch

Work cluster stitch, chain 2, one more cluster into same stitch.

Total 2 cluster stitches into same stitch

Cluster Shell Stitch

Work cluster V stitch, chain 2, one more cluster into same stitch.

Total 3 cluster stitches into same stitch.

Row 4 – Cluster Stitches

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet 1 into first stitch, skip 1 stitch, [cluster V into next stitch, skip 3 stitches] repeat 2 (2/ 2/ 3/ 3) times (2/2/2/3/3 cluster V made until center)
  • Cluster shell into center stitch.
  • [Skip 3 stitches, cluster V into next stitch] repeat 2 (2/ 2/ 3/ 3) times (2/2/2/3/3 cluster V after center). Double crochet 1 into last stitch. Total 5 (5/ 5/ 7/ 7) cluster stitches made

Row 5 – This will be the RIGHT side

Double crochet stitches RIGHT side will be your romper RIGHT side.

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet 12 (12/ 12/ 16/ 16) until center (center of cluster shell), Please work 1 stitch into each stitch, 2 stitches into each 2 chain space.
  • 5 double crochet into center stitch.
  • Double crochet 12 (12/ 12/ 16/ 16) until the end of the row. Total 29 (29/ 29/ 37/ 37) double crochet stitches.

  • Turn, chain 3, 2 double crochet into first stitch, double crochet 19 (19/ 23/ 27/ 31) until center stitch, 2 double crochet into center stitch,double crochet 19 (19/ 23/ 27/ 31) until last stitch,2 double crochet into last stitch. Total 44 (44/ 52/ 60/ 68) stitches
  • Skip to second piece and repeat the same on second piece. Please control your direction on the second piece and make sure you work on RIGHT side. Double crochet stitches RIGHT side is your romper RIGHT side
  • Join into a round by slip stitch over first double crochet stitch of first piece. Total 44+44=88 (44+44=88/ 52+52=104/ 60+60=120/ 68+68=136) stitches.
  • Fasten off

Romper body

Body Round 1 – Cluster Stitches

  • Mark first double crochet stitch of two stitches on front and back center.

We will start and finish the rounds on back center and, work back center stitches in two steps.

Here is how we work cluster shell in two steps

  • We need to start the round with cluster V into marked stitch
  • Add one more cluster stitch into same position to complete the cluster shell at the end of the round.
  • Join yarn into marked stitch.
  • Chain 3, turn to WRONG side, work cluster V into marked stitch on back center.
  • [Skip 3 stitches, cluster V into next stitch] repeat until marked stitch on front center. Please skip joining line chain stitches of previous row. Total 10 (10/ 12/ 14/ 16) cluster V stitches made between center clusters.
  • Work cluster shell stitch into front center (marked) stitch
  • [Skip 3 stitches, cluster V into next stitch] repeat until the end of the round. Total 10 (10/ 12/ 14/ 16) cluster V stitches made between center clusters on next side.
  • Work one more cluster into same position to complete the cluster shell. Chain 2, join the round by slip stitch over first cluster stitch.

Body Round 2 – RIGHT side

Here is how we work back center stitch in two steps on double crochet round

  • We need to start the round with double crochet 1 into marked stitch on back center
  • Add 1 more double crochet into same position at the end of the round.
  • Turn to RIGHT side, chain 3, double crochet 1 into marked stitch on back center.
  • Double crochet 46 (46/ 54/ 62/ 70) until next marked stitch on front center.
  • 2 double crochet into marked stitch on front center.
  • Double crochet 46 (46/ 54/ 62/ 70) until the end of the round.
  • Add 1 more double crochet into same position of first double crochet stitch. Join the round by slip stitch. Total 96 (96/ 112/ 128/ 144) stitches.

Romper legs

Round 1 – RIGHT side

  • Chain 3, turn to RIGHT side.

Double crochet 1 into center stitch of both front & back cluster shell at the same time. You have set the crotch

Double crochet into remaining stitches on first leg. 1 more double crochet into same center stitch. Join into a round by slip stitch. Total 60 (64/ 72/ 84/ 96) stitches.

Round 2 – Cluster Stitches – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 3, [cluster V into next stitch, skip 3 stitches] repeat through and join the round by slip stitch. Total 15 (16/ 18/ 21/ 24) cluster V stitches made.

Round 3 – RIGHT side

Turn, chain 3, double crochet through round, join the round by slip stitch. Total stitches are the same (60/ 64/ 72/ 84/ 96).

Edging – Work edging on the RIGHT side (do not turn)

Front and back post double crochet stitches are used on edging

  • Here is how we make front and back post double crochet stitches
  • Front post double crochet – Double crochet around the stitch in the FRONT side. Yarn over, insert hook from the right side to left side from the front of the stitch. Yarn over and pull through.

Yarn over and pull through last two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

  • Back post double crochet – Double crochet around the stitch in the BACK side. Yarn over, insert hook from the right side to left side from the back of the stitch. Yarn over and pull through.

Edging Round 1 – DECREASE

  • Chain 3, [front post double crochet 1 over first stitch, back post double crochet 1 over next TWO stitches] repeat through the round. Total 40 (42(*)/ 48/ 56/ 64) stitches. (*) Back post stitch over last three stitches instead of last two stitches on 3-6 months. Join the round by slip stitch over first post stitch.

Edging Round 2 for size 0-3 months & 3-6 month one round

Edging Round 2 – Round 3 for size 6-12 months, 1-2 years & 3-4 years two rounds

  • Chain 3, [front post double crochet over front post stitch,back post double crochet over back post stitch of previous round] repeat through. Join the round by slip stitch over first post stitch. Total stitches are the same (40/ 42/ 48/ 56/ 64).
  • Fasten off after last round and secure yarn ends.

Repeat the same on the second leg

  • Join the yarn and once again start with double crochet 1 into same center stitch of front & back cluster shell at the same time. Double crochet into remaining stitches of second leg. 1 more double crochet into same center stitch. Total 60 (64/ 72/ 84/ 96) stitches. Repeat the same leg and edging pattern on the second leg. ❤

Shoulder straps and single crochet finishing over romper top – Work on the RIGHT side Option 1 – Straps in the same color

  • Join the yarn over 2nd stitch from top edge.
  • Loosely make around 50 / 50 / 60 / 60 / 70 chain stitches for first strap.
  • Starting from 2nd chain stitch from the hook, single crochet into chain stitches.
  • Continue with arm opening. Total number of stitches are not so important. You can work 1 stitch over side of first 3 half double crochet rows, 1 stitch over side of double crochet rows, 1 stitch into line between double crochet rows.
  • Make same number of chain stitches for second strap. Single crochet into chain stitches and continue to single crochet over romper top. Repeat the same around making total 4 straps. Finish with slip stitch and fasten off.

Option 2 – Straps in the second color

  • Join yarn into base of first stitch, chain 1, single crochet around arm openings and over romper top. Finish with slip stitch and fasten off. Total number of stitches are not so important. You can work 1 stitch over side of first 3 half double crochet rows, 1 stitch over side of double crochet rows, 1 stitch into line between double crochet rows. Work 1 stitch into each stitch over romper top, 2 stitches into top edges.
  • Straps – make 4
    • Using second color yarn loosely make around 50 / 50 / 60 / 60 / 70 chain stitches. Starting from 2nd chain stitch from the hook, single crochet into chain stitches.
    • Fasten off and sew on over romper top edges

Tassel – Optional – make 4

  • Wind yarn over your fingers, 25-30 times. Make a knot, repeat a couple of times. Sew on straps, wind yarn over tassel, secure yarn tail by weaving. Cut tassel ends.❤
