Baby Boy & Girl Romper Crochet Pattern

Baby Boy & Girl Romper is a fashionable cute design, perfect for any occasion and everyday use. This adorable romper can be worn over a short/long sleeve body.

The pattern is in five different size: 0-3 months / 3-6 months / 6-12 months / 1-2 years / 3-4 years.

Materials used

Yarn : Cotton, bamboo, wool or other baby safe yarn in Size 3/DK/Light worsted.

Around 410/450/530/660/800 yards or 380/410/490/610/740 m yarn is needed.

Crochet hook : Size E / 3,5 mm. If it is bigger size than you prefer you can size down your hook, if it is too small than you can size up your hook.

Gauge : 17 stitches x 8 rows per 4”/10cm square in double crochet stitches.

Stitches used :

  • Chain stitch, Slip stitch,
  • Single crochet (UK double crochet),
  • Half double crochet (UK half treble crochet),
  • Double crochet (UK treble crochet), Back / front post double crochet.

Stitch Instructions :

  • When there is a number following the stitch, it means you work stitches over that number. For example double crochet 4 means 1 double crochet in each of next 4 stitches.
  • Where you see brackets [ ] in the pattern, it means that you work every thing in it as a set. For example if you see [double crochet 3, chain 1] repeat 2 times, it means double crochet 3, chain 1, double crochet 3, chain 1.

  • Romper top back and front panels are worked separately and joined later on.
  • You will find tables showing numbers of rows and stitches needed by size to guide you as you are working on your project.
  • Chain stitches at the beginning of the rows/rounds don’t count as a stitch.
  • The pattern is basically repeat of 4 rows

  • Loosely make 21 chain stitches (23/ 25/ 27/ 31).
  • Start crocheting into 3rd chain stitch from the hook, half double crochet into chain stitches. Total 19 (21/ 23/ 25/ 29) stitches.

Row 2 – This will be the RIGHT side

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet into back loops on this row. Total stitches are the same (19/ 21/ 23/ 25/ 29).

Row 3 – WRONG side – 1st Post Stitch Row

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet 1 into first stitch.

[FRONT post double crochet 1, BACK post double crochet 1 into next stitch] repeat through the row, double crochet 1 into last stitch. Total stitches are the same. Front post double crochet We will double crochet around the stitch in the FRONT side, Yarn over, insert hook from the right side to left side of the stitch,Yarn over and pull through

Row 4 – RIGHT side

  • Mark center stitch (10th /11th / 12th/ 13th/ 15th stitch).
  • Turn, chain 1, working 3 stitches into center stitch, single crochet through the row. Total 9+3+9= 21 (10+3+10= 23/ 11+3+11= 25/ 12+3+12= 27/ 14+3+14= 31) stitches

Row 5 – WRONG side

  • Turn, chain 2, working 3 stitches into center stitch, half double crochet through the row. Total 10+3+10= 23 (11+3+11= 25/12+3+12= 27/13+3+13= 29/15+3+15= 33) stitches

Row 6 – RIGHT side

Turn, chain 3, double crochet into back loops on this row. Total stitches are the same (23/ 25/ 27/ 29/ 33).

Row 7 – WRONG side – 2nd Post Stitch Row

  • Turn, chain 3, double crochet 1 into first stitch. [FRONT post double crochet 1, BACK post double crochet 1 into next stitch] repeat through the row, double crochet 1 into last stitch. Total stitches are the same.

Repeat Row 4 – Row 7

  • one more time for size 0-3 months and 3-6 months (Row 8-11)
  • two more times for size 6-12 months and 1-2 years (Row 8-11, Row 12-15)
  • three more times for size 3-4 years (Row 8-11, Row 12-15, Row 16-19).

Fasten off after last 3rd (3rd / 4th / 4th / 5th) Post Stitch Row (Row 11/ 11/ 15/ 15/ 19). Repeat the same for the back panel, this time do not fasten off after last Post Stitch Row, continue with joining front and back panels.

Joining romper front and back panels

Row 12 (Row 12/Row 16/Row 16/ Row 20) – RIGHT side

  • Once again mark center stitches (14th /15th / 18th/ 19th/ 23rd stitch) on both panels.
  • Turn to RIGHT side, chain 1, working 3 stitches into center stitch, single crochet through the first piece, chain 10 (12/ 14/ 16/ 18). Total 13+3+13=29 (14+3+14=31/17+3+17=37/18+3+18=39/22+3+22=47) single crochet stitches
  • Skip to next piece and repeat the same, chain 10 (12/ 14/ 16/ 18). Please control your direction on the second piece and make sure you work on the RIGHT side.
  • Join into a round by slip stitch over first single crochet of first panel. From now on join each round by slip stitch over first stitch of the round. To have uniform texture on the body, we still need to turn after each round. Total 29+10+29+10=78 (31+12+31+12=86/37+14+37+14=102/39+16+39+16=110/47+18+47+18=130) stitches.

Romper Body Round 1 – WRONG side

  • Fasten off and join yarn into center chain stitch on the romper side.
  • Chain 2, working on the WRONG side, and 3 stitches into front and back center stitches, half double crochet through the round. Total 38+3+38+3=82 (42+3+42+3=90/ 50+3+50+3=106/ 54+3+54+3=114/ 64+3+64+3=134) stitches around the body. Please notice that we have carried the joining line to romper side, thus we need to work joining side stitches in two part (19+19=38/21+21=42/25+25=50/27+27=54/32+32=64)

Body Round 2 – RIGHT side

  • Turn to RIGHT side, chain 3, double crochet into back loops on this round. Total stitches are the same (82/ 90/ 106/ 114/ 134).

Body Round 3 – WRONG side – 1st Post Stitch Round

  • Turn, chain 3, [FRONT post double crochet 1, BACK post double crochet 1 into next stitch] repeat through the round. Total stitches are the same.

Body Round 4 – RIGHT side

  • Again mark center stitches on romper front and back.
  • Turn, chain 1, working 3 stitches into center stitch, single crochet through the round. Total 40+3+40+3= 86 (44+3+44+3=94/ 52+3+52+3=110/ 56+3+56+3=118/ 66+3+66+3=138) stitches.

Body Round 5 – WRONG side

Romper straps over back panel

Row 1 – RIGHT side

  • Mark 5 stitches from both ends of back panel.
  • Join yarn, chain 3, double crochet into first 5 stitches. Leave remaining stitches unworked

Row 2 – WRONG side – Post stitch row

  • Turn to WRONG side, chain 3, double crochet 1 into first stitch. FRONT post double crochet into 2nd stitch, BACK post double crochet into 3rd stitch, FRONT post double crochet into 4th stitch, double crochet 1 into last stitch.

Starting from Row 3

Fasten off first strap. Quick Tips: You can make a longer strap and change the position of the buttons as needed.

Second strap Join yarn into marked 5th stitch from the end,

Single crochet around front&back panel and straps – RIGHT side

  • Working on the RIGHT side, join yarn into stitch next to second marker
  • Single crochet all around straps, front and back panel. Total number of stitches are not so important.

You can work

  • repeat [1 stitch over the side of first row, 2 stitches over the side of next row] on the strap,
  • 3 stitches into edges of strap end,
  • 1 stitch into each stitch over the strap end,around 10 (10/ 15/ 15/ 20) stitches over sides of front&back panel,
  • 1 stitch into each stitch between front&back panel.

Front panel buttonholes

Single crochet 3 into first stitch, chain 3, skip 3 stitches.

You have set the first buttonhole.

Single crochet until last 4 stitches, chain 3, skip 3 stitches, single crochet 3 into last stitch. You have set the second buttonhole

Work the same over other sides and between front&back panel, the second strap.

Finish with slip stitch into stitch next to first marker.

Half double crochet around the front&back panel and straps – WRONG side

  • Carry yarn by one more slip stitch into next stitch
  • Turn to WRONG side, skip first two slip stitches

Half double crochet into each stitch around the front&back panel and straps, including 3 stitches into each chain space on front panel.

  • Finish with slip stitch into next stitch on back panel.
  • Fasten off, weave in all yarn ends on the wrong side

Button – Crochet buttons are used on this design. Please use stronger buttons on bigger size.

  • Make a magic loop, chain 3, double crochet 10 into the loop, pull the yarn tail tight to close up. Join the round by slip stitch over first double crochet stitch of the round.
  • Fasten off, weave yarn end through stitches, pull on yarn tail and close tightly.
  • Sew on strap ends

Pocket – Optional

  • Row 1 Loosely make 15 (16/17/18/19) chain stitches, start crocheting into 3rd chain stitch from the hook, half double crochet into chain stitches. Total 13 (14/15/16/17) stitches.
