American Flag Pillow: Crochet Home Decor

The Americana Flag Pillow is the ideal Pillow for the summer. This pillow exudes lengthy summer days spent at the lake, replete with campfires, pyrotechnics, picnics, and parades.

The straightforward needlepoint pattern makes this the ideal summertime endeavor. This pattern is suitable for both novice and seasoned crocheters.

Summer is around the corner and I couldn’t be more excited! My favorite time of year is the 4th of July so I wanted to create the perfect summer pillow, the Americana Flag Pillow.

The stitch pattern is simple, making this the perfect summer project. This pillow screams long summer days by the lake filled with picnics, fireworks, parades, and campfires.

Yarn

Caron Simply Soft, Weight 4 Medium, (100% Acrylic, 315 yds/288m/6oz/170g), 1 skein of each

Color

(A) Harvest Red, (B) White, (C) Dark Country Blue. Hook Size – J 6.0mm and D 3.25mm Gauge – 4” square = 14 sts x 9 rows

Finished size – 16” W x 16” H

Will need a tapestry needle, scissors, and 16” x 16” pillow insert. Stitch markers may also be used to help with seaming.

  • ch        chain
  • dc        double crochet
  • rep      repeat

Stitch Description

Crossed double crochet: This st is worked over 2 sts, but is counted as 1 cross. Skip 1 st, dc in next st, working in front of dc just made, dc in skipped st.

Pattern Notes

  • Multiples of 2 + 1
  • Ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • Do not skip first stitch in each row.
  • After ch 57, work in back bump for Row 1. Rotate the chain toward you and insert your hook through the back bump loop.

Begin: (Using J hook) with color A ch 57.

Row 1: Dc in second ch from hook, crossed dc across to last st, dc in last ch; ch 1, turn. (2 dc, 27 crossed dc)

Row 2: Sc across; ch 1, turn. (56 sc)

Row 3: Dc, crossed dc across to last st, dc in last st; ch 1, turn. (2 dc, 27 crossed dc)

Rows 4 – 7: Join color B, rep rows 2-3. Rows 8 – 11: Join color A, rep rows 2-3. Rows 12 – 15: Join color B, rep rows 2-3. Rows 16 – 23: Join color A, rep rows 8-15.

Row 24: Join color A, sc 33, join color C, sc 23; ch 1, turn.

Row 25: Dc, work 11 crossed dc, join color A, work 16 crossed dc, dc; ch 1, turn (2 dc, 27 crossed dc)

Rows 26 – 27: Rep rows 24 – 25.

Rows 28 – 31: Join color B, rep rows 24 – 25.

Rows 32 – 39: Rep rows 24 – 31.

Rows 40 – 43: Join color A, rep rows 24 – 25. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.

Stars

Make 8 (using D hook). With color B, ch 2.

Round 1: Sc 11 in second ch from hook, sl st in first sc.

Round 2: *Ch 3, sl st in second ch from hook attaching to the blanket (see below photo), sc, sk next sc, sl st in next st, rep from * to end. Fasten off.

Back of pillow

Begin: with color C, ch 57.

Row 1: Dc in second ch from hook, crossed dc across, dc in last ch; ch 1, turn. (56)

Rows 2 – 43: With color C throughout, rep rows 2 – 3 from Front Panel, ending with a rep of row 3. Fasten off. Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.

Border

Line up both sides of pillow with RS facing out.

Note: Line up both sides and secure them with stitch markers to hold in place.

Round 1: Attach color C in corner st, proceed to work through both layers around, (sl st, ch 1, sc, ch 2, sc) in same corner as join, sc 47 down side with rows running horizontal, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp, sc 54 across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp, sc 47 across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp, sc 54, sl st in first sc of corner.

Round 2: sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc blo 49, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc blo 56, rep from * to end, sl st in first sc of corner. Fasten off, weave in ends.
