To create your project you will need the following materials:

  • Double-twisted jute rope -1.25 lbs / 0.55 kg
  • Hook No. 4 mm
  • Scissors
  • Needle, sewing thread

Quick reminder and abbreviations of the stitches:

  • CH – chain stitch
  • SC – single crochet
  • DC – double crochet
  • SL ST – slip stitch
  • ST – stitch

Approximate finished size is:

width – 15 ¾” (40 cm)

height – 12 ¼” (31 cm)

depth – 4 ¼” (11 cm)

handles length – 19” (49 cm).

GAUGE (for SC): 4” x 4” = 14 STs x 14 rows (10 x 10 cm = 10 STs x 10,5 rows)

So let’s get started!

SIDE PARTS

Make a chain of 11 + 1 CH (the last stitch is a lifting loop).

ROW 1: Insert the hook into the second stitch from it (see red arrow on pic.1) and work SC 11 along the starting chain. One CH and turn. [11 sts]

ROW 2: SC 11. One CH and turn.  [11 sts]

ROW 3: *DC 1, CH 1, skip 1 stitch* rep. 5 times, DC 1, one CH and turn.   [11 sts]

There are several options for how to work the first DC in a row. I use THE FOLLOWING METHOD (see video).

ROW 4:  = ROW 2 = ROW 6, 8,10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26.

Work SC in ROW 4 in the top of DC, then – in the space between DCs (pic. 2). Repeat to the end of row. See VIDEO HERE.

ROW 5: = ROW 3 = ROW 7, 9, 11,13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25.

ROW 27: SC 11. One CH and turn.  [11 sts]

ROW 28: *3 SC in one stitch, SC 9 along the straight line, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 38 along the straight line* rep. 2 times (pic. 4). SL ST to close the row. [106 sts]

ROW 28-30    – we will lace the rectangle with single crochets so that the detail is more durable and keeps its shape (pic. 5).

ROW 29: SC, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 11, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 40, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 11, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 39,

SL ST to close the row.      [114 sts]

ROW 30: SC 2, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 13, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 42, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 13, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 40,

SL ST to close the row.      [122 sts]

Break the rope, fasten off and hide the tail. Crochet another one detail like this.

FRONT AND BACK PARTS

Work in the same way as the previous parts. The only difference is the length of the starting chain.

Make a chain of 51 + 1 CH (the last stitch is a lifting loop).

ROW 1: Insert the hook into the second stitch from it and work SC 51 along the starting chain. One CH and turn.                  [51 sts]

ROW 2: SC 51. One CH and turn.  [51 sts]

ROW 3: *DC 1, CH 1, skip 1 stitch* rep. 25 times, DC 1, one CH and turn.                            [51 sts]

ROW 4: = ROW 2 = ROW 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26.

ROW 5: = ROW 3 = ROW 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25.

ROW 27: SC 51. One CH and turn.  [51 sts]

ROW 28: *3 SC in one stitch, SC 49 along the straight line, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 38 along the straight line* rep. 2 times. SL ST to close the row.                      [186 sts]

ROW 29: SC, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 51, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 40, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 51, 3 SC in one stitch, SC 39,

SL ST to close the row.      [194 sts]

Crochet another one detail like this.

BAG BOTTOM

The bottom is rectangular. Crochet with classic single crochet in turning rows.

Make a chain of 55 + 1 CH (the last stitch is a lifting loop).

ROW 1: Insert the hook into the second stitch from it and work SC 55 along the starting chain. One CH and turn.  [55 sts]

ROW 2-14: SC 55. One CH and turn.  [55 sts]

ROW 15: SC 55.

Break the rope, fasten off and hide the tail.

BAG HANDLES

Make a chain of 80 + 1 CH (the last stitch is a lifting loop).

ROW 1: Insert the hook into the second stitch from it (pic. 7) and work SC 80 along the starting chain. One CH and turn. [80 sts]

ROW 2: SC 80. In this row insert the hook into the stitches of the starting chain (red arrows on pic. 8).

So we tie the previous row with single crochets – VIDEO. Crochet another one handle like this.

SEWING DETAILS

All seams will be made in the classic way – slip stitches. All seams will be done from the front. This makes the edges of the bag neat and creates the perfect shape.

At first sew the bag bottom to the details of the front and back of the bag (large rectangles) – pic. 9.

Then sew the side parts – VIDEO. Then sew the side parts.

We will sew the handles with a regular thread to match the bag and a needle.

Insert the end of the handle from the wrong side into the 7th hole from the left in the first row. Pull the end of the handle into the corresponding hole in the second row (red arrow on pic. 10).

Sew the handle on the wrong side with a needle (pic. 11).

Sew the second end of the handle in the same way on the right side.

Sew the second handle symmetrically
