OVERVIEW:

  • The sweater is worked in 4 pieces: Back, Front and 2 sleeves
  • Each piece is worked back and forth in rows beginning at lower edge.
  • Stitches are picked up around neck for the neckband.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS:

  • Option 1: Nako Elit Baby: 5 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7) grams.

Note: You also could choose another yarn brand, make sure that the yarn is DK and the yarn weight is 250m/ 100g.

Option 2: If you love mohair cardigan, you could knit with these two yarn threads at once:

  • Alize Angora Gold, color No.62: 2 (3, 3, 4, 4, 4) balls. Each ball is 100g.
    • YarnArt Merino Sport, color No.760: 3 (3, 4, 4, 4, 5) balls. Each ball is 100g.

Note: You could choose another yarn brands. The alternatives for Alize Angora Gold are the yarns which is 400m/100g. The alternatives for YarnArt Merino Sport are the yarns which is 550m/100g. The yarns should be made partly from wool so that your cardigan will turn out soft and light.

  • Size 3.5mm (length: 70cm or 80 cm) circular knitting needles
  • Size 4.5mm (length: 70cm or 80cm) circular needles or size to obtain gauge
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Knitting markers

GAUGE: (Approximate) 18 sts and 23 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in stocking st with 4.5mm needles.

Before knitting the sweater, you need to make a gauge swatch which is the only way to make sure that the recommended needles give you the correct gauge.

  • Mattress stitch: Beginning from the bottom row of one piece, thread the needle through two stitches on the opposite piece.
  • Picking up stitches: With the RS facing, insert the needle into the first stitch; wrap the yarn through the needle and pull a loop through. Continue with all sts.

BACK PANEL:

(*) With 3.5mm circular needles, cast on 90 (96, 100, 106, 116, 126) sts.

Row 1: **K1, P1; repeat from ** to end of row

Repeat Row 1 until work from beginning is 23⁄4″ (7cm).

Change to 4.5mm needles. Row 2 (RS): K1 in all sts Row 3: P1 in all sts

Repeat Row 2 and Row 3 until work from beginning is 11½ (12, 12½, 13, 13½, 13½)” [29 (30, 31, 33, 34,

35) cm], ending on a WS row.

Shape armholes:

Row 4: Cast off 2 (2, 2, 2, 3, 3) st at the beginning of row, K1 to end of row

Row 5: Cast off 2 (2, 2, 2, 3, 3) st at the beginning of row, P1 to end of row

There are 86 (92, 96, 102, 110, 120) sts remaining. (*)

Work in pattern stitch (repeat Row 2 and Row 3) until work from beginning is 18 (19, 19½, 20½, 21, 22)” [46 (48, 50, 52, 54, 55) cm], ending on a WS row.

Shape shoulder and neck:

Place a marker on each side of center 14 (16, 18, 16, 20, 20) sts for back neck.

Row 6 (RS): K1 to first marker for right shoulder. Remove marker, join the 2nd ball of yarn and bind off 14 (16, 18, 16, 20, 20) sts; removing the 2nd marker for back neck. K1 to end of row for left shoulder.

You will now work on both shoulders AT THE SAME TIME with two separated balls of yarn.

Row 7: On left shoulder, P1 in all sts. On right shoulder, cast off first 6 (6, 6, 7, 7, 8) sts, P1 in remaining sts.

Row 8: On right shoulder, K1 in all sts. On left shoulder, cast off the first 6 (6, 6, 7, 7, 8) sts, K1 to end of row.

Shape shoulder and neck:

Place a marker on each side of center 10 (8, 10, 12, 12, 12) sts for back neck.

Row 6 (RS): K1 to first marker for left shoulder. Remove marker, join the 2nd ball of yarn and bind off 10 (8, 10, 12, 12, 12) sts; removing the 2nd marker for back neck. K1 to end of row for right shoulder.

You will now work on both shoulders AT THE SAME TIME with two separated balls of yarn.

SLEEVES:

With 3.5mm needles, cast on 36 (38, 40, 39, 40, 42) sts.

Row 1: **K1, P1; repeat from ** to end of row

Repeat Row 1 until work from beginning is 23⁄4″ (7cm).

Change to 4.5mm needles.

Row 2 (RS): Inc in all sts. There are 72 (76, 80, 78, 80, 84) sts after this step

Row 3: P1 in all sts

Row 4: K1 in all sts

Repeat Row 3 and Row 4 until work from beginning is 15½ (16½, 17, 17½, 18, 18½)” [40 (42, 43, 45, 46, 47) cm]. Cast off all sts, leave a long yarn thread to sew the sleeve to the body.

Make other Sleeve the same.

FINISHING:

Block pieces.

Sew shoulder seams with mattress stitch.

Sew tops of Sleeves into armholes with mattress stitch. Sew side and Sleeve seams with mattress stitch.

Neckband:

With RS facing and 3.5mm needles pick up, beginning from left shoulder and pick up and K 6 (6, 6, 6, 8, 8) sts down left neck edge, 38 (40, 42, 44, 48, 52) sts on vertical-and-curved Front edge, then 6 (6, 6, 6, 8, 8) sts up right neck edge.

Turn to Back panel, pick up and K 2 sts down right neck edge, 38 (40, 42, 44, 48, 52) sts on vertical-and-curved Front edge, then 2 sts up left neck edge.

There are 92 (96, 100, 104, 116, 124) sts in total.

Note: It is fine if the amount of stitches you pick up for the neckband is not 92 (96, 100, 104, 116, 124) sts. However, you need to make sure that it is not too different from the number shown in the instruction and it must be an even number.

Begin with WS, work in K1, P1 Rib until the neckband is 2½” (6cm). Cast of in ribbing. Sew neckband seam. Wave in ends.
