OVERVIEW:

  1. The sweater is worked in 4 pieces: Back, Front and 2 sleeves
  2. Each piece is worked back and forth in rows beginning at lower edge.
  3. Stitches are picked up around neck for the neckband.
Chunky Sweater Pattern

MATERIALS AND TOOLS:

  • Nako Bonjour, color No. 23689: 8 (9, 10) skeins for size XS-S (M-L; XL-XXL). Each skein is 100g.

Note: You could choose another yarn brands, make sure that the yarn weight is Bulky, about 110m/100g.

  • Size 4mm (length: 70cm or 80 cm) circular knitting needles
  • Size 5 mm (length: 70cm or 80cm) circular knitting needles or a pair of 5mm pointed needles.
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Knitting markers

GAUGE: (Approximate) 12 sts and 20 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in stocking st with 5mm needles.

Before knitting the sweater, you need to make a gauge swatch which is the only way to make sure that the recommended needles give you the correct gauge.

A QUICK GUIDE TO THE KNTTING STITCHES USED IN THIS PATTERN:

  • Increase (inc): Cast-on increase
  • Mattress stitch: Beginning from the bottom row of one piece, thread the needle through two stitches on the opposite piece.
  • Picking up stitches: With the RS facing, insert the needle into the first stitch; wrap the yarn through the needle and pull a loop through. Continue with all sts.

BACK PANEL:

(*) With 4mm circular needles, cast on 63 (67, 71) sts.

Row 1: **K1, P1; repeat from ** to last st; K1 Row 2: **P1, K1; repeat from ** to last st; P1 Repeat Row 1 and Row 2 four times more.

Change to 5mm needles.

Row 3 (RS): **K1, P1; repeat from ** to last st; K1

Repeat last Row 3 until work from beginning is 12 (12½, 12½)” [30 (31, 32) cm].

Shape armholes:

Row 4: Cast off 2 st at the beginning of row, work in pattern to end of row Row 5: Cast off 2 st at the beginning of row, work in pattern to end of row There are 59 (63, 67) sts remaining. (*)

Continue work in pattern until work from beginning is 19½ (20, 21)” [49 (51, 53) cm], ending with a WS row.

Shape shoulder and neck:

Place a marker on each side of center 9 (9, 11) sts for back neck.

Row 7 (RS): Work in pattern to first marker for right shoulder. Remove marker, join the 2nd skein of yarn and bind off 9 (9, 11) sts; removing the 2nd marker for back neck. Work in pattern to end of row for left shoulder.

You will now work on both shoulders AT THE SAME TIME with two separated balls of yarn.

Row 8: On left shoulder, work in pattern in all sts. On right shoulder, cast off first 3 (4, 4) sts, work in pattern in remaining sts.

Row 9: On right shoulder, work in pattern in all sts. On left shoulder, cast off the first 3 (4, 4) sts, work in pattern to end of row.

Repeat last 2 rows once more. There are 19 (19, 20) sts on each shoulder.

Row 6: Cast off all sts of both shoulders.

FRONT PANEL:

Work from (*) to (*) as given for Back.

Continue work in pattern until work from beginning is 18½ (19, 20)” [47 (49, 51) cm].

Shape shoulder and neck:

Place a marker on each side of center 9 (9, 11) sts for back neck.

Row 1: Work in pattern to first marker for left shoulder. Remove marker, join the 2nd skein of yarn and bind off 9 (9, 11) sts; removing the 2nd marker for back neck. Work in pattern to end of row for right shoulder.

Repeat the last 2 rows once more. There are 19 (19, 20) sts on each shoulder.

Row 6-9: Work in pattern in all sts of both shoulder.

Cast off all sts of both shoulders, leave a long yarn thread to sew two edges of the shoulders together.

SLEEVES:

With 4mm needles, cast on 27 (28, 29) sts.

Row 1: **K1, P1; repeat from ** to end of row

Row 2: If the amount of sts of Row 2 is an even number, **K1, P1; repeat from ** to end of row. If the amount of sts of Row 2 is an odd number, **P1, K1; repeat from ** to end of row.

Repeat Row 1 and 2 four times more.

Change to 5mm needles.

Row 3 (RS): Inc in all sts. There are 54 (56, 58) sts at the end.

Row 4: **K1, P1; repeat from ** to last st, K1

Repeat row 4 until work from beginning is 17 (17½, 18)” [43 (45, 46) cm]. Cast off all sts, leave a long yarn thread to sew the sleeve to the body.

Make other Sleeve the same.

FINISHING:

Block pieces.

With RS facing:

Sew shoulder seams with mattress stitch.

Sew tops of Sleeves into armholes with mattress stitch. Sew side and Sleeve seams with mattress stitch.

Neckband:

With RS facing and 4mm needles pick up, beginning from left shoulder and pick up and K 4 sts down left neck edge, 21 (25, 27) sts on vertical-and-curved Front edge, then 4 sts up right neck edge.

Turn to Back panel, pick up and K 21 (25, 27) sts on vertical-and-curved Back edge. There are 50 (58, 62) sts in total.

Begin with WS, work in K1, P1 Rib until the neckband reach 6½ (6½, 7)” [16 (17, 18) cm]. Cast of in ribbing. Sew neckband seam. Wave in ends.
